Formerly the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Città della Pieve, since 1986 it has been the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Perugia-Città della Pieve.

La cathédrale a été considérablement remodelée au fil du temps et cela est clairement visible tant à l'extérieur qu'à l'intérieur. La façade est asymétrique et la puissante tour a été ajoutée plus tard, tandis qu'à l'intérieur de la crypte, on trouve encore des vestiges de la fondation originale, d'abord de style roman puis gothique. Les excellences artistiques à l'intérieur sont les deux œuvres du Pérugin, le baptême du Christ sur un autel latéral et derrière le maître-autel la Madone en gloire entre les saints Gervasio et Protasio, à qui l'église est dédiée, et le bassin de l'abside orné de fresques de Pomarancio. Une église qui mérite absolument une visite.

Die Kirchen und ihre Vorplätze sind in italienischen Städten ein Hingucker. Hier umso mehr, als dass diese Stadt auch viele Jahrhunderte dem Kirchenstaat gehörte. Die Kirche ist von innen viel ansprechender als von außen. Die Innenstadt selbst ist prächtig und mit vielen verwinkelten Gassen, wie es in einer italienischen Bergstadt sehr typisch ist. In einer warmen Sommernacht hier ein Eis holen - die Eisdielen haben nicht nur lange offen, sondern die Portionen hier sind grandios.
