NOT recommened is the Livorno Aquarium. Overpriced, dirty and depressing tanks (especially depressing was the one for the octopus 😞🐙).
Terrarium on the first floor was even more depressing ... very small (and lonely) living space for the animals: plastic plants and branches (really?? why??) and many animals in solitary confinement. NOT okay.
As said before, fish tanks were really grimey. For 16 euros per visitor, one would expect the animals exhibited would be taken care of better. The whole visit lasts at max about an hour.
I feel not cheated by the admission fee, though. But I do for seeing in which sad state the animals reside there.
If you are in Livorno (or in the area) and are looking for something to do ... I suggest you skip the aquarium.
Website and advertisments are deceiving. Which is a shame, taking into consideration it's situated right at the coast, in a huge building that has so much potential for having an amazing aquarium. Gift shop is also a bit weird; selling lots of toys of animals not seen at the aquarium.
Still, I had a great day in Livorno, but to the aquarium I...
Read moreUpdate 6/2022. We wanted to take another visit after 3 years. Price has raised up to 16€. Childrens are considered as childrens only up to 140cm?!!! This must be joke. My 10 years old kids have already almost 150cm since 9 years No reduced prices for families. If you want to decrease the price you have to pre- pay online in very advance for fixed date. It seems that building is in same condition as it was in 2019. It looked like there is reconstruction on the way but it seems that not much has been changed.. This time i will not go for another visit. I am very very disapointed and sad about it..
2019: This place is worth to visit. Even it's under reconstruction still the expositions are the best which i could see in my life. When you see the giant green turtle it is great experience. Napoleon fish, sharks, tuna fish , sharks, octopus. Clown fish-Nemo, Dorry :) seahorses and many many others. Also other expositions. Huge ant colony, various frogs , beetles etc. Nice view from terrace. Will...
Read moreLovely aquarium! They had a great array of sea life to see and small screens by each tank that told you about each fish and some fun facts about how they live. The shark and turtle tank was my favourite, and the ray tunnel is a close second.
Lots of information available about each animal, and a section dedicated to explaining plastic waste in the ocean and sea turtle rehabilitation. Most of the information boards were in both Italian and English (and I think french) which was super useful.
Some enclosures seemed rather small for the type or number of fish in them, but overall most tanks were decorated and very natural looking.
There is an insect and reptile floor also, which was small but had a good selection of critters!
I visited quite late in the day so I couldn't spend as much time here as I'd have liked, and the gift shop was quite expensive.
A nice activity if you're in Livorno, I would love to...
