When we are in Italy, basically all the gelaterias of a city / village, that we find, are tried out. So also in 2018 in Livorno. 90% of Gelaterias are indistinguishable from each other. Yes, some have mulberry, the other pear. Double Choco they all seem to have this year.
Actually, because we were hungry and vis à vis is a delicious Paninishop where we had eaten, we discovered this Gelateria. Salty needs sweet! So we changed the street side.
Almost when you come in, there is something different. No freezer with too much piled up icecream. No bright colors, everything in pastel. Pastellic green. and yellow dominates The ice is hidden under a Nirosta table. With glossy lids, which immediately reminds me of my childhood when the old ice-woman of our village, in a spartan shop with only one ice-cream machine, interposed additional sorts to the freshly stirred, in similar vats with shiny lids. But no one cared, because this fresh ice cream from the stirrer was simply an adventure these days.
So how would that be in Livorno? Behind the counter father and son There are a few seats, but without Copas. There are Frozen yogurt and especially shakes, as in many places in Italy. It sounds like that, but it's something that reminds me of further days again: Espuma !!!!! I have not seen this in Austria for ages.
Its ice cream mixed up with cream and shaked. The aroma is pushed in that liquid brew, expoldes on the palate and cools sensational. Anyway, on calories you should not look at all.
The Caprillis follow a different ideology. Natural products from the region. Taste comes only from fruits, nuts and alcohol. All classics are represented dealing on Tastes. But there are also own creations. For example the house type, crema di caprilli, Fiocco as the basis, rum and cognac from an Italian manufactory as a condiment, cardamom as an ingenious highlight. Stracciatella then brings crack in to the story. They call it Crema di Caprilli.
Even otherwise they combine extravagant: Annanas with ginger, lavender, peach with nectarine - yes, that works! - Arranzini, Frufru, or the unforgettable Crema di una Volta, something like Sabaione or Panna Cotta ice cream.
But who thinks that's all, is wrong. The Conos, before the ice comes on top, are covered with a touch of exquisite dark, ideally tempered (the roller runs under the table) coated chocolate at the top. With the cold icecream on top, it cures immediately and forms a dream of crunch around the bag.
You see, it is to kneel down and I hope that my favorite hometown Gelateria-Brothers will read this report and may be inspired. Because one thing is clear, for us after the 6th visit,we have found a new dimension of Italian ice cream. We´ll be there for sure next...

Caprilli is hands down one of the best ice cream shops I’ve ever visited—not just in Livorno, but anywhere in Italy. Tucked away just a short stroll from the sea, this place is a true gem. The moment you walk in, you’re hit with the aroma of freshly made cones and the sight of a beautifully curated selection of flavors.
The gelato itself is absolutely divine. Creamy, rich, and made with what you can tell are high-quality ingredients. Every flavor I tried tasted natural and not overly sweet. The pistachio is a standout—nutty, smooth, and perfectly balanced. The frutta di bosco (mixed berry) was bursting with fresh, tangy flavor, and their stracciatella had generous chunks of real chocolate.
The staff are incredibly friendly and patient, even during busy times. They’re happy to offer suggestions or let you try a flavor before choosing. You can really feel the pride they take in their craft.
Prices are fair, portions are generous, and the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. Whether you’re a tourist exploring Livorno or a local looking for your daily gelato fix, Caprilli is an absolute must.
Do yourself a favor—skip the tourist traps and treat yourself to something truly authentic. Caprilli is...
