Faro - La Lanterna — Attraction in Trieste

The 31 metre high old lighthouse of Trieste, constructed in 1830, is the only Austrian-designed lighthouse in Italy (courtesy of the classical architect Matteo Pertsch, who lived out the end of his life in Trieste, dying in 1834 - only a year after the lighthouse went into active use).

Inactive since 1969, it is free to climb the very narrow staircase to the top. There is a hidden restaurant a third of the way up!

Il faro Lanterna di Trieste, progettato dall’architetto Matteo Pertsch, si trova al Molo Fratelli Bandiera. Esso divenne operativo nel 1833. Nel 1927, con la costruzione e messa in funzione del faro della Vittoria, perse la sua originaria importanza e di conseguenza nel 1969 venne dismesso. La Lega Navale Italiana della sezione di Trieste, oltre che a curarne il restauro, nel 1992 ne ha fatto la sua sede. Una volta salita la scala a chiocciola composta da 144 scalini di pietra ed usciti sul ballatoio esterno, grazie ai suoi quasi 35 metri d’altezza, è possibile gettare lo sguardo a 360° su l’intera città. La vista è veramente mozzafiato. Fino al 2022 dal locale di servizio si poteva anche accedere superiormente alla lanterna, la struttura a vetri che in passato conteneva e proteggeva la lampada e l’ottica, ma per ragioni di sicurezza ora non è più possibile. Per visitare la struttura è bene informarsi preventivamente presso la Lega Navale Italiana di Trieste, che ha in gestione il monumento, quando questo sia possibile; l’impiegata è molto gentile e disponibile. Best view of the city and the port. There's a restaurant about 1/3 of the way up. It is a secret from most of the tourists as there was no one there when we went. Worth the mile or so walk from the city center.
