This shrine enshrines Yoshio Oishi and other Ako Ronin who were killed in the Ako Incident. There was a small shrine in the Edo period to enshrine the Ako Ronin who had achieved their true motives, however, Emperor Meiji sent an imperial envoy to Sengakuji Temple, where the graves of the Ako Ronin were located, to mourn them, and the momentum for enshrining the Ronin as deities grew, leading to the construction of the present shrine. The shrine was built in 1900, making it one of the biggest tourist attractions in Ako, even though it’s a very new shrine. The shrine is built on the site of the former Ako Castle, and some parts of it, such as the Ote-mon Gate and the Nagaya-mon Gate of the Oishi Residence, show the remains of Ako Castle. The shrine is also home to the "Gishi Treasure House," which exhibits items left behind by Ako Ronin and other related items, as well as a part of the historic site of Ako Castle, and the Oishi Residence Garden, a designated national historic site. Therefore, if you wish to appreciate the footprints of the Ako Ronin in detail, it’s recommended to tour around the Treasure House and the garden. Even so, the imposing stone statues of Ako Ronin that stand along the path from the torii gate to the hall of worship are sure to...

Oishi jinja shrine is built on the former OISHI’s mansion and enshrines about 300 years ago Samurai Yoshitaka OISHI, the leader of Ako Gishi (the lord of Ako, Naganori ASANO’s 47 loyal servants). “Chushingura” one of the most famous Kabuki play is written to base on the episode that Ako Gishi killed the enemy instead of their lord. Paintings depicting famous scenes from “Chushingura” are on display. The treasure museum displays samurai’s swords, armors and household items. The giant tree in the garden is...
