Yaefuji (八重藤 – Double-Layered Wisteria)
Yaefuji (八重藤), or double-layered wisteria, is a rare and elegant variety of wisteria (fuji) known for its densely petaled, multilayered blossoms that create a fuller, richer appearance compared to the more common single-petaled types. The name “八重” (yae) means “multi-petal” or “double-petaled,” and it’s often associated with classic beauty in Japanese flower culture.
This type of wisteria typically blooms a bit later than the standard varieties, around early to mid-May, and its flowers hang in thick clusters with a luxurious texture. Colors range from pale lavender to deep purple, and sometimes even soft pink, depending on the cultivar. The scent is sweet and subtle, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.
Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi is one of the best places in Japan to view yaefuji up close, often as part of their spectacular Wisteria Festival (大藤まつり). The park displays various types of wisteria, and the yaefuji stands out for its ornamental fullness and delicate grace.
