The term Ōfuji (大藤) refers to a “Great Wisteria”, typically a very old and expansive wisteria tree with large, sweeping clusters of blossoms — often considered the highlight of any Japanese flower garden during spring. These magnificent trees are not only botanical wonders but also symbols of longevity, grace, and natural harmony in Japanese culture.

One of the most famous examples of Ōfuji is found at Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi Prefecture. The park’s legendary 150-year-old wisteria tree covers an area of more than 1,000 square meters, with its lavender-colored blossoms forming a breathtaking floral canopy each year in late April to early May. The sight of countless drooping petals swaying gently in the breeze is like stepping into a dream — a popular destination for both tourists and professional photographers.

Ōfuji trees are supported by vast trellises that allow the heavy vines and blossoms to spread out evenly, creating a shaded walkway beneath. These wisterias are often illuminated at night during peak bloom, offering an even more magical and romantic experience.

訪問日は2025年5月6日。前から訪問したいと思っていたのですが、やっと実現できました。 アニメ「鬼滅の刃」のキーアイテム、鬼が嫌う藤の花ですが、こちらへ来て普段見ている藤のレベルでない豊かな生命力を感じ、しばらくみとれていました。まさに、すごいというしかありません。パワーをいただきました。 英文の説明の中に「trellis area」という聞き慣れない言葉がありますが、これは藤が絡まっている棚の水平方向の広がりを示す言葉のようです。

大藤の驚異的生命力 The Astonishing Vitality of the Great Wisteria 1996年足利市の中心部にあった樹齢130年余、幹の直径60cm、幹の周長2.3m、棚面積500m2の「大藤」を20キロ離れた現在地に移植するため、準備に3年余りの時間をかけ、延べ2,100名の努力により、見事に成功。搬送に際しては、藤棚をタテ12m、ヨコ6m、面積72mにまで切り詰め、棚ごとクレーンで釣り上げ、トレーラーに載せて運びました。その後、驚くほどの速さで成長し、今では藤棚の面積1,000m2(たたみ600畳)を超える「大藤」として復活。 「藤」は、優雅なしなやかさとは対処的に、野性味にあふれた生命力を持っており、樹齢1,000年をはるかに超えるものもあると言われています。「藤」の音が「不死」に通じることから「縁起の良い」花とされ、いつしか「大藤」が長寿、健康を祈る対象として、来園者の皆様から親しまれ、「ご神木」としてたたえられています。

In 1996, a Great Wisteria over 130 years old measuring 60 cm in trunk diameter. 2.3 m in trunk circumference, and covering a trellis area of 500 square meters-was transplanted from central Ashikaga City to its current location 20 kilometers away. Preparation took over three years and involved the dedicated efforts of more than 2,100 people. The transplantation was a remarkable success. For transport, the wisteria trellis was pruned down to 12 meters long and 6 meters wide (a total area of 72 square meters), lifted by crane with the trellis intact, and loaded onto a trailer. Amazingly, the tree grew rapidly after the move and has now been restored to a Great Wisteria with a trellis area of over 1,000 square meters (equivalent to 600 tatami mats). Despite its elegant and graceful appearance, the wisteria possesses wild, vigorous vitality. It is said that some wisteria trees can live well beyond a thousand years.
