Ebisuya Onsen — Attraction in Beppu

Excellent high quality onsen with two different sources, sulfur and simple spring! Entrance ¥1000, shampoos provided, you need to bring your own towel. Operating hours 10:00-23:00, there is parking. Place your shoes at the shoe lockers in the entrance and give the key to the reception, they will then give you your free locker key. The reception floor is considered as the 3rd floor, the onsens are in the 2nd and 1st floor so you need to go down (lift of stairs). The facilities are a bit different depending on the floor and they swap between male and female depending on the day (odd days: male 1st floor/female 2nd floor and vice versa for the even days). For the 1st floor after the changing room (free lockers, free dryers) as you enter the onsen area there is a small fountain for kakeyu, a walking onsen with big pebbles to massage your feet, 9 showerheads with stools and mirrors and a big half outdoor half indoor tub with white milky sulfur water. After that, going down a few stairs there is a pentagon shaped wooden hut with glass walls and a roof which houses an indoor style jacuzzi with simple spring water. Further on there is a big outdoor tub with milky white sulfur water. Three outdoor barrels made of stone in which you can bathe and relax on your own, simple spring, the two with hot water, the one with cold water to wash off your sweat after using the sauna. Finally there is the outdoor style box steam sauna (5 boxes but only 3 were operational), open the wooden box door, go in and then only your head comes out from a small hole on the top of the box while your body gets engulfed in onsen steam, you will start sweating in no time. There was also a chill out room which didn't seem to be operational at the time of my visit. A really nice aspect is that not only you have two different kinds of water (sulfur and simple spring) but the tubs have different water temperature, for example the 1st sulfur tub as you enter is the hottest, the 2nd outdoor sulfur is less hot and in the center of it there is a separated area with lukewarm sulfur water, thus you can adjust your body with the temperatures and stay in the water for quite long time. The views are amazing, trees and green and you can see the Myoban bridge on the horizon. I personally spent almost two hours there! Back at the 3rd floor (reception) they have created some really nice spaces where you can relax after bathing or even sleep! There is an atmospheric circular room with mosaic and pillows to sit on, ambient lighting and a big crystal at the center. Another area with huge poufs to relax with windows and ambient blue light at night. A small photo exhibition with the cat resident (very cute). Another area with bit lay down chairs and comfy stools for your feet or proper tables if you prefer, here you can ring the bell and the very friendly reception can serve you drinks, coffee, beer or mango smoothies. Finally there is also a bedrock bath sauna style which costs a bit extra to use. Went on a weekday and there were very few people (probably really busy during the weekend). Spectacular onsen - highly recommend. Took the bus from Beppu Station and it took about 25 mins. The stop is about 3 mins walk from Ebisuya. Once you arrive, put your shoes in a locker, buy your ticket from the machine and bring the key to the front desk. In case you have questions, there’s an explanation in English for the two options and the woman at the front desk spoke English. We opted for the option with the bedrock sauna (worth it!). The woman explained the lay of the land...one floor for men, another for women, bedrock sauna is women only or co-ed option (we used this area as a couple as a meeting spot since otherwise we were separated). Towel and pjs provided along with soap, shampoo, etc in the bathrooms. The women’s floor had 5 or 6 different baths with diff temperatures and one outside. Decent onsen. A little pricy ¥1,200 The hot springs are sulphuric so be prepared to smell like sulphur after use.

I used the facilities on the first floor. They alternate the floors each day for men and women. (Example: IF Monday - women on 1st floor, men are on the 2nd floor; Tuesday women on the 2nd floor then men are on the 1st floor.)

The 1st floor has one partially indoor pool, a glassed hut with a semi jacuzzi, 3 small ceramic tubs with varying degrees of heat (warning the farthest from the entrance is cold water), one big outdoor pool, steaming cupboards that you sit in and it targets everything from the neck down and a room to the left of this that I didn’t explore.
