Hakozaki Shrine, a Shinto shrine, was created in 923 and was rebuilt or renovated a few times due to fire, war damage, etc. Based on Shinto shrine ranking and classification system in Japan, from 1871 to 1946, it is classified as imperial shrine (kampeisha or kanpeisha) category [vs. national shrine] of the so-called government or official shrine. The Shrine had been closely related to Emperor Daigo in its early history and, later, Emperor Åjin, Empress JingÅ« and Tamayori-bime.
While the Shrine has its important historical role, the Shrine itself is unique for its main worship hall, tower gate, votive lantern, main torii gateway [red gate removed in 2018 due to high maintenance cost] which are all designated by Japanese government as important national cultural treasures.
The Shrine has large, open space for its complex and courtyard and is very suitable, comfortable and pleasant for touring and visits, especially, the Shrine, generally, is NOT crowded.
The Shrine is well maintained and is neat with smooth ground for walking or even jogging and other forms of exercises, such as biking, for the community residents.
