日本最大級の高麗門で、平成16年（2004年）萩開府400年を記念して復元されたものです。 藩政時代、城下から堀内に入るには北の総門、中の総門、平安古（ひやこ）の総門のいずれかをくぐりました。 10月半ば「北の総門」近くのお堀に、ミズアオイが咲いていました。 ミズアオイは絶滅危惧種で、山口県では萩市だけに自生している植物だそうです。

Reconstruction of the north gate to the samurai town. People of samurai class lived on the side closer to the castle, while merchants and townspeople lived on the other side of the outer moat. The gate seems to have been reconstructed in 2004.

せっかく復元した総門なのに、あまり周知されていないのか閑散としていました。 駐車場も見当たらないので、中々ここまでは来れないのかも。

タイミングによっては隣接する民家から 夏みかんの実がなっており、 萩らしさを感じ取れるのではないでしょうか。
