Nex to the Motsujin temple, it is a very nice greenery park and during sakura season, there are quite a few amazing sakura trees near the pond. Makes for an excellent picnic or relaxing spot.

Spent 30 minutes here staring at the sakura trees and forgetting about the hustle...

奥州藤原氏第2代当主である藤原基衡公の妻によって建立された寺院跡です。 2011年 に「平泉—仏国土(浄土) を表す建築・庭園及び考古学的遺跡群」として世界 遺産登録されています。 1573年に焼失しましたが、その後境内が水田として使われていたため遺構が残っていたそうです。 現在は建築物としては2棟の阿弥陀堂が再建されており、池を含む周辺はとても綺麗に整備されています。 癒しの空間としては申し分ないのですが、作庭に興味がない自分としては「池の綺麗な広い公園」が正直な感想です。 しかし説明板によると、 ・池は石組・州浜・中島などがほぼ完全な状態で残されており、当時の作庭技法を理解する上で貴重。 ・池を中心とする庭園は平安時代の浄土庭園の優れた事例として高く評価されている。 とのことで、非常に貴重な遺構であることは間違いないと思います。
