Hiroshi Senju Museum Karuizawa — Attraction in Karuizawa

This place is very pretty and picturesque, but unfortunately you are not 'allowed' to take photos. There are security cameras and guards to make sure you don't :). The artwork is beautiful but even more so with the building. The lighting that comes through, with the minimal design, contrasted with nature is really amazing.

They have booklets in all sorts of languages. I suggest you follow the order in the booklet to truly understand the pieces you are looking at.

The gift shop is small, I wish they had more things to purchase related to the current exhibit. They basically had small prints and postcards.

⚠️ BEFORE you go to the museum, go to the free gallery at the bottom of the car park. They run a video with the artist explaining about his art, inspiration and techniques (Japanese only) but it will give you a better understanding of the art in the gallery.

The building is worth a visit, the artwork is a plus. Not allowing photography is annoying, I would have loved to share the place with friends and family who are unable to visit. The garden around the gallery...

I've never been to a museum where the architecture and display methods so well fit the exhibited works. The projected illumination in the dark back rooms adds energy and life to their paintings.
