A beautiful walk! You can start from Kurama station, which takes you through all the incredible shrines Mt. Kurama has to offer. The beginning has a lot of stairs, so be aware (to skip a part you can take the cable car, but then you would miss some beautiful spots!) At the beginning (Niō-mon) there is a gate where you pay for a ticket. When you reach the main shrine (with some beautiful cherry blossoms around it) you can go to the most left corner where you can continue towards Kibune shrine, which will take you along the root path! A beautiful forest part with alot of nice shade. Please other tourist: be respectful and not too loud when walking here- for it’s a very serene area, which a lot of locals enjoy.

We took this trail from Kifune Shrine to the main Kuramaderu temple (it takes about 45 minutes), and although it is quite steep and involves a lot of stair climbing, we really enjoyed the hike and the views from the temple. (It can be accessed by crossing the small red bridge just down the road from the Kifune Shrine - see the attached picture.) The trail continues on the the Kurama train station on the other side, but we didn't do that part of the trail because we had come by car. Although it wasn't a problem, it had recently snowed, so the trail was very wet, and there was a fair bit of snowed falling/dripping out of the trees (at the end of February).

We can see this place on the way from Kurama Dera to Kibune shrine. Many roots expose on the surface of the ground. It looks like wild road. Long time ago, when Yoshitsune, Japanese famous samurai worrier, was called "Ushiwakamaru" in his childhood, he trained his sword skill and footwork here. Here is historical records of "Genji" , which is one of the biggest samurai families in 10th century. You should wear proper clothes to climb a mountain. This place is a complete mountain. Do not put high heels, please.
