I visited on 21 July and checked the tide schedule on the website in advance, picking the time for the strongest whirlpool that day.
The walk to the viewing area was much longer than expected, and the worst part was that we could not even go further in to see the main whirlpool area where the sightseeing ships pass.
Part of the bridge was under renovation and scaffolded, and the door to continue further was shut. I am not sure if it is always like this or if we were just unlucky that the bridge was closed halfway.
To make things worse, there was an unpleasant toilet-like smell along the way to the viewing point.

I think it would be more impressive from a boat (and more expensive of course) I’ve been during an average time and the spirals were very small. Other than that the facilities are well made and it’s easy to get there by direct bus from the JR Naruto station (or with your own car of course). Some cafés and convenience store around.
