I went to Oita to do something with my Asumemo friend Atsuko Ishida @asumemo_atsuko. A special edition of the feeling of traveling in Hiroshima, Oita.

Oita Prefectural Art Museum OPAM @opamjp 50th Anniversary of the Death of Heihachiro Fukuda Exhibition @heihachiro50

OPAM was designed by Shigeru Ban, the same architect behind the much talked about Shimose Art Museum @simose_artmuseum in Hiroshima. The lattice pattern is scattered throughout the exterior and interior, and the modern space was cool.

It was raining that day, but it was about a 15-minute walk from the brand new Oita Station to OPAM, and there was a shopping arcade and a covered walkway, so people could stay dry. Great urban development.

I saw Fukuda Heihachiro on NNK's Sunday Art Museum the other day, and when I spoke with Shimizu Minoru, a critic for Gerhard Richter @grichter22_23, he mentioned Fukuda Heihachiro, Tokuoka Shinsen, Kumagai Morikazu @cafekaya1710044, Munakata Shiko @munakatashiko_k, and Koga Harue as artists who represent Japanese modernism and should be recognized worldwide and who will be remembered for generations to come.

That's why I definitely wanted to go see his work. Fukuda Heihachiro is a Japanese painter from Oita who represents the prefecture.

His exploration of the expression of water, such as ripples, ice, and water, which are designated as Important Cultural Properties, and his modern sense, depiction, and expression have made a splash in traditional Japanese painting. A fusion of concrete, abstract, and design.

His attitude of always sticking to sketching.

The way the sky with cumulonimbus clouds was framed, the contrast between the snow on the stepping stones and the snow on the ground, the thin frosting on Japanese sweets, the bamboo in a variety of colors, and the Japanese paintings that give the impression of rain without depicting it itself, just from the traces of rain on the roof tiles.

The aesthetic sense of white space, the unexpected composition, the sense of subject matter and sensibility give a sense of Japan and Japanese modernism.

Young couples also seemed to be enjoying themselves, and many people of all ages and genders were captivated, giving us a sense of Oita's...

Personally I have been to a lot of museums in Japan and all had Japanese translation. Or at least an app or QR codes. This one didn’t have translation in neither of the three exhibits. Staff was very friendly and helpful but personal I don’t like walking around a museum constantly using the google translation app, which is often wrong translated. A beautiful building though with a couple of free things you can see downstairs.

Please add English translation to future...

I agree that museums give local people a chance to experience something different or new as their obligation. But I wish this museum be a means of more expressing Oita’s identity. Architecture was good. Of course, exhibition was good. But this place’s real charm i felt was introducing local artist’s art works and artisan’s crafts. Sadly, it seemed to be a one-time event.

A Tate Modern of Oita. Allocate an hour or so to enjoy the ambience, and see some of the art pieces on display. The museum can be covered quickly as its not very big compared to other international art museums. The main area is free of charge but special exhibitions might cost you 400 to 600 Yen per visit. There is a cafe and a gift shop. Wheel chair access can be easily arranged.

If you love architecture, and or art, etc, this is one of must visit art museum in the area. The museum entrance is free, so you can see the building as long as you want. But you have to pay entrance fee if you want to see the exhibition. There are small souvenir shop on the first floor, cafe on the second floor, and you can see beautiful wooden ceiling structure on the 3rd floor.
