Aoba Castle: A Symbol of Sendai Aoba Castle, beloved as a symbol of Sendai City, was constructed by Date Masamune. This castle, with its grand scale and historical value, continues to captivate many people. History of Aoba Castle Construction of Aoba Castle began in 1601 and was completed in 1602 by Date Masamune, who supported Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Built on Mount Aoba, approximately 130 meters above sea level, it was strategically located to command a panoramic view of Sendai Plain. Characteristics of Aoba Castle No Donjon: It is said that the castle was intentionally built without a donjon to avoid arousing the suspicion of the powerful Tokugawa shogunate. Grand Stone Walls: The massive stone walls, with a slope of approximately 70 degrees, are an iconic feature of Aoba Castle. Panoramic View: From the castle ruins, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of Sendai City and the Pacific Ocean. Aoba Castle Today Unfortunately, most of the buildings, including the donjon, were destroyed in the Boshin War towards the end of the Edo period. Today, only the stone walls, the site of the honmaru (main enclosure), and a statue of Date Masamune on horseback remain. The site of Aoba Castle is now Aoba Mountain Park, a popular spot for both residents and tourists. The Aoba Castle Honmaru Hall exhibits a CG reconstruction of Aoba Castle and displays materials related to Date Masamune. Access to Aoba Castle Train: Approximately 20 minutes by bus from Sendai Station Car: Approximately 30 minutes by car from...

The climb itself from the Sendai City museum (Haikyuu picture spot here) to the top of the castle ruins is somewhat challenging, but if you take your time, it'll be fine. Hydration is key, so even if you don't have enough water or electrolytes with you, there are vending machines at the top. Once you reach the top, you climb a set of stairs to go through torii (temple gates) and here you'll eventually find the famous statue of Date Muramasa and beyond that, a shrine, souvenir shop and a few places to eat. The sendai specials at beef tongue (gyutan) and edamame shakes...

Arriving to Sendai should go as follows: get a zunda shake from Zunda Saryo, go to the Loople Sendai bus with 210 yen, take the bus to the castle ruins and admire the view. I swear just standing atop this mountain and looking out makes me feel so at peace. I think it’s a great sunset spot, and it’s free. You may have to pay for the entry to the shrine, but the view is free. You can also see the Daikannon statue in the distance, which when it was first constructed was the tallest statue in the entire world. I believe at current it sits at number 6.
