Visited this shrine, which was near my hotel, during my first day in Tokyo. It was raining profusely but it was certainly a nice first visit to a Japanese shrine. Very easy to access as it was right next to a subway station (I forgot which one it was) but I took a nice walk from my hotel, which is also an option if you prefer walking from Roppongi. There was ample signage around the place detailing the history in English and Japanese. There was also a small store (as with all other shrines) selling small items and for donations. Overall, really quaint and peaceful (probably due to the rain too) and a nice place to visit if you're in the area - you can probably walk the entire area in less than 30 mins.

Very nice little surprise-shrine in the middle of Nogizaka-area! ^^ We just happened to walk past and were surprised by the calm un-tokyo-like atmosphere and feeling of the place. Recommend to visit for those who feel like getting away from the city to get a breather but don't actually have time to get out of the city xD They sell various charms, goshuin (shrine stamp), and when we were there there happened to be a traditional Japanese wedding being held which was cool to see ^^

御神体は乃木希典大将。 乃木大将は日露戦争で旅順港攻略に功成り名遂ぐ方ですが、世論の非難に晒され、２人のご子息の戦死を含む多くの犠牲と引き換えにした功績です。乃木大将は多くの犠牲（５万人）を出してしまったことに責任を感じ「割腹して罪を謝し奉りたい」旨を陛下に奏上した、陛下は「今は死ぬべきときではない。卿（けい）もし死を願うならば、朕の世を去りてのちにせよ」と仰り、御言に従い陛下崩御の後、殉死します。 乃木大将は西南戦争の折、陛下から賜った連隊旗を敵に奪われる失態を犯しており、それを生涯悔いていました。遺書にはこのことが動機とされています。 重い荷を背負って生きて生き抜くことの辛さを識り、明治時代の志高く政を司った賢者とは裏腹に夏目漱石の「坊ちゃん」等に出てくるような努力せず権限を得た凡民からの心ない世論の非難に晒されたご神体を祀った神社です。 司馬遼太郎の「坂の上の雲」では、演出上児玉源太郎総参謀長の引き立て役にされ、あたかもそれが真実のように語られるのは情報誘導が横行した明治時代を連想して極めて残念です。国旗を破る蛮行を平気で映像化できる報道機関を見ますと、現在でも「あるべき姿」よりも、自分の生活に影響の無いことはどうでも良い風潮が強くなり、いつの間にか意図しない場所に導かれているようにも感じます。 参拝日は１月２日。明治神宮のある原宿駅から千代田線に乗り換えて乃木坂駅に降りましたが、原宿では一神教信者の方が拡張器を用いて神のご加護を得られない、あはれぶ衆生に救いの手を差し伸べていらっしゃいました。 日本の神は本居宣長の定義する処が最も的を射ていると思います。 「凡て神（迦微）とは、いにしえの御典等に見えたる天地の諸々の神たちを始めて、これを祀れる社に座す御霊をも申し、また人はさらにも云わず、鳥獣木草の類い海山など、そのほか何にまれ、尋常（よのつね）ならず、すぐれたる徳（こと）ありて、可畏（かしこ）きものを神（迦微）とは云なり。 すぐれたるとは、尊きこと、善きこと、功（いさお）しきこと、優れたるのみを云いに非ず、悪しきもの、奇（あや）しきものなども、よにすぐれて可畏（かしこ）きをば神と云いなり」 まあ、青原の仏風に帰依している手前が引いているところで説得力に乏しいですが…。 昨年、先の大戦で出征した最後の親類が亡くなり、期するところあってこちらを参拝しました。 親類は海軍の飛行士で戦闘機「紫電」を操縦桿を握りました。中島飛行機の技師達が戦後口を閉ざしたように、親類も多くを語りませんでした。航続距離の短い「紫電」の飛行士が見てきた地獄は容易に理解できるものではありません。 偉大な明治の先人の重圧を受け、大戦を生き抜き、重い荷を背負い昭和、平成、令和を生きた９５年の生涯に深い敬意を表すと共に、やがて同じ寺で眠るときまで、お護り頂いた祖国で意志を嗣がせて頂きます。

Worth a visit in autumn as there is bunch of red leave in the garden. The Nogi General (active in ww1 and ww2) can pretty much represent the spirit of Japanese Bushido culture. He is also the 3rd general administrator in Taiwan during the Japanese colonization. As a Taiwanese, the shrine is really a great place to have a look on Taiwan history.

A very interesting, yet peaceful shrine without many visitors (contrary to other shrines on the same day - Constitution Memorial Day, 03 May). We also ran into two wedding ceremonies which were really beautiful to watch! 🎎 There is no manual goshuin, but the printed options are very pretty!

I’m a huge believer of spirits as well as going to shrines and praying. I loved this shrine I hope to go again when the construction is over as it was extremely noisy and I went yesterday. Japanese shrines or any place of worship is VERY PEACEFUL. Loved it and will come back again.
