A boiled dumpling restaurant, is it a popular restaurant?
In a great location, 0 minutes from Roppongi Crossing, this restaurant is always crowded with people. Due to its location, over 90% of the customers are foreigners, but I think the TripAdvisor effect is great.
Is it okay to share a table for four? I answered yes, and after waiting 25 minutes, I was shown to the second floor, which was less than half full and completely empty. But there was a table seating area for four people, which is about the size of a two-person restaurant, and two people had to sit side by side, so you had to tilt your shoulders to sit there. Why is this even though it's empty?
They didn't let in any more customers, and the seating never had to be shared until I left.
The reason they made people line up was just to make it look like a popular restaurant with a constant line to passersby.
The kitchen on the first floor, which is pretty laid-back, seems to be functioning with plenty of room, so the food comes out quickly. It's not an operational restriction.
The service from the staff was very friendly, their English was perfect, and their consideration was wonderful. Their friendly explanations with gestures reminded me of the theme park in Urayasu.
They gave me a discount if I poured myself a beer from the server, and a bigger discount if I poured a second glass, and a discount if I bundled up the plates and glasses I used on the way out.
The details were interesting.
They explained that they were a special, divine foam super master restaurant, selected by Suntory, but even if you pour yourself or use the same glass for a discount, if it's divine foam, I wonder if the special server is the divine foam machine, not the master's technique.
Is it really okay for Suntory to call themselves divine foam super masters?
The food we had was a salad of pickled mustard greens and green onions for the appetizer, juicy boiled dumplings for the main course, and drool-worthy chicken.
It was made in a central kitchen, and it had a school lunch feel, but the seasoning was quite tasty.
However, when I looked at the receipt again, the prices were a bit high and I didn't feel satisfied.
When I left the restaurant, about 60-70% of the second floor seats were filled, but about eight foreigners were lined up in front of the restaurant.
Service charge: ¥330-*2 ¥660- Draft beer mug, self-service ¥660-*2 4 juicy boiled dumplings ¥1089- Drool-inducing chicken ¥759- Draft beer mug, self-service, same glass ¥565- Help discount for grouping tableware...
Read moreNot sure why this place has a rating of 4.8. The portions are small, gyoza are tiny tiny, the shumai do not look like the picture ( I guess it taste good but there is no shrimp in the shrimp shumai). I was going in with higher recommendation given it has 4.8 with 14k review but idk what people are thinking. Grant, I did not eat the main gyopao so mainly just had dimsum . The Taiwanese chicken was the best thing we liked, however when ask for another order, either there was some miscommunication but they keep saying we already got it, when I kept asking them “I wanted to order another order.” Finally, figure out they wanted to say we need to order thru our phone with a QR code which is different from when we first order.
Other good thing is that they give the kids a free soda. But they charge a service charge for the adults. I have no idea why people are saying average cost is 1000-3000 yen per person. The tiny portion you need like 4-5 order to get full. We had 2 kid and 2 adult, my wife barely ate and it was more than 10000 yen, and we didn’t even drink anything (my kid wanted to get gyoza and I googled that and found this place). I left still hungry but didn’t want to spend more money. I was already unhappy wiht experience but checking out was also slow. Our server sky was nice but otherwise I wasn’t too happy with overall experience.
Overall, I guess food was good but tiny for the price. Would not come back however. Please adjust your expectations and google review...
Read moreWe were looking for a fun, easy last meal before we flew out of Tokyo in the evening, and the lunch we had at Gyopao ended up being one of our best meals of the trip! The staff were incredibly friendly, accommodating and welcoming, and most spoke very fluent English. This was especially appreciated as they worked very hard to confirm that we could be confident which portions of our order were gluten free for my partner. When we first sat down our server walked us through the paper menu and circled everything that he knew was gluten free before heading to the kitchen to find out if there was anything else we could order. The servers checked in frequently throughout the meal, although we appreciated that we could just order via QR code when we wanted an extra dish or another beer. I had a great time pouring my own beer at the counter (which was cheaper than having them pour for you). All of the food was delicious, especially the soup dumplings, and even though they were sold out of their famous Taiwanese fried chicken, our server went and knocked out some extra prep work while we ate our starters so that he could make us an order of chicken to try before we left. We are so glad that he did, because it really is as good as he hyped it up to be! This was the perfect way to end our trip on a high note with delicious, affordable food, and earnest and gracious service that was so welcoming I felt compelled to write this review. If you need a stop in Roppongi,...
