I'm not really a "bonsai person", so I feel like I didn't appreciate the museum fully. We just showed up and walked around and really enjoyed ourselves. The missing star is because there's not much information about the trees as you walk around... No description of the age or species. When we were leaving we heard a group tour (not sure how they got a group tour...) guide mention one of the trees was over 1000 years old. Incredibly awesome! but I wish the trees had placards or something. We went when it was raining, so maybe the staff were walking around a bit less.

With that said, there are tons of beautiful bonsai trees here. If you are into bonsai trees, they have classes, and one of the world's best bonsaiers runs the place. There are photos of a few famous people (A list actors, worlds (formerly?) richest person) who have visited, which definitely drives the point home that it's a special place.

There are bonsai trees and pots, as well as books and other stuff for sale. There are also very friendly (and English speaking) staff/apprentices who can help...

This is a really great visit. 1000 yen to get in and easy to access via one train + one bus (your Suica will get you on the bus as well). You don't need to buy tickets in advance and when we went there was only one other person there.

Every tree is a tremendous work of art and the overall environment in the garden is beautiful. As I understand, the garden is cultivated by a long time practitioner of bonsai and a number of students, so surrounding the trees are several workshops with equipment for this purpose. it feels almost more like being in someone's garden than a museum. As a result, be patient if it's lunchtime; we had to poke into the garden a little to be seen by someone who could take our admission fee. It's not like a standard museum where there's a lobby etc; you literally just enter the garden.

The only downside is there is no information on the specific trees and it's completely self-guided. We didn't have an issue with that, but if you prefer a guided tour this may...

This place is the famous Kunio Kobayashi Bonsai garden and Museum .

With a 800 yen entrance fee you can spend as much time getting to enjoy beautiful bonsai. Each one is a master piece. There are explanation given and a basic intro on how to , about Bonsai art.

There is year long internship too. But to my dismay it's only every Sunday .

I went without any reservation, but if you can call and reserve , you can have a session on bonsai specifics and know how a little in detail.

There was some arrangements for tea ceremony too ,I think, buy do not how to get that booked.

There was an intern who could communicate well in English. And there were some foreigners who were learning too.

I had the opportunity and luck to see and observe the The Great Master himself Kunio Kobayashi San at work.

If you're a Garden enthusiast or not too, you'll certainly enjoy viewing each of these masterpieces.

I intend to again in spring when the flowering trees will...

Shunkaen Bonsai Museum is a bonsai garden in bonsai master Kunio Kobayashi home in Tokyo. It is designed as a large courtyard housing 1000’s of bonsai trees along with a koi pond with the most beautiful and biggest koi I have ever seen. One of the trees is estimated to be 1100 years old and they have one that the will sell for $1 m. He takes in students from all over the world to learn the art of bonsai and it’s not cheap. The course takes 6 years. Our guide was one of the students Raffael from Poland he’d been there 5 years. You can roam through parts of the masters house which in Japanese standards is very expensive. The master is on site and will sign his bonsai book in English. I noticed a few celebrities have been there Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Geoff Bezoz. Even if you don’t practice the art the bonsai are amazing.
