Panting, sweating even though it’s cold out, but you made it to the top! This area, aptly named “the back of the horse,” is the top of the sand dunes. Ocean on one side and trails of ants crawling up the other side make for an interesting and unexpected view in Japan. Wait, those are people, not ants. It’s a bit tricky to walk on sand especially up and down steep slopes, so please watch your footing. This free attraction is worth seeing when you come to Tottori. Actually, it’s the main attraction and reason you may come to Tottori, so make the most of it and climb the hill if...

It was unfortuntaely dull and raining the day we visited, but we still enjoyed climbing to the top of the dune, looking out on the ocean, and trying to get some nice shots of the windblown ridges in the sand. It's a bit of a climb but nothing any reasonably fit person can't do. (We are in our 60s/70s.) Because it was raining and we thought things would get messy, we bought large tie-around boot covers in one...

A place of wonder. The whole dune site is simply gorgeous and it's a delight to just walk around the site. Some paraglider use this spot also.

A more basic and expensive-for-nothing thing is the ride on top of a camel, which I don't recommend. Use your two legs and just wander through this amazing place

And, above all, don't miss the sand museum which is just besides the...

Tottori sand dune is the most famous dune in Japan, but the scale is not as large as I had initially expected. Nonetheless, it is definitely worth visiting when you are in the area. There are plenty of parking lots around the site. Make sure to be prepared with extra socks since you will certainly have sands in your shoes after walking around the dune.
