We have visited Tsuruoka twice now, May 2023 and July 2024, to hike the Dewasanzan and see the Shokushinbutsu (sacred mummies) in the area. Watanabe-san at the Tourism Info center has been amazingly helpful both times. After covid, the bus schedules and visting hours of many places was affected, and Watanabe showed us and explained our options for all the special buses and taxis and shuttles and when/whether we would need reservations. We speak a little Japanese, Watanabe speaks excellent English, and made multiple taxi and/or visit reservations on the phone for us at various sites. For those who have a little bit of Japanese understanding and who want to see Japanese culture outside of Tokyo, I highly recommend Tsuruoka and the Tourism Center. Read moreI have been to a few Tourist Information Places in Japan but I think this one is "Ichiban" or Number One as they say in Japan. All of the staff speak English very well, (exceptionally well by Japanese standards) They answered all sorts of complicated questions, made a reservation for me, even told me where to get my trousers patched! The woman working there also reassured me that if I had any further questions, I could just come back and they'd help me.
