Review of Mountain Court Shymbulak, Almaty Mountain Court Shymbulak, often associated with the broader Shymbulak Mountain Resort, offers a truly unique and memorable experience nestled in the majestic Trans-Ili Alatau mountains just outside Almaty. While specific information on a standalone "Mountain Court" property is limited, it likely refers to accommodation options within the Shymbulak Medeu Camp or the Shymbulak Resort Hotel, both highly regarded for their location and amenities. Here's a breakdown of what makes a stay at Shymbulak so appealing: Location: 5/5 The absolute strongest selling point is the location. Situated at an altitude of 2,260 meters (and with cable cars reaching up to 3,200 meters), you are literally in the heart of the mountains. This provides breathtaking panoramic views, fresh alpine air, and immediate access to the ski slopes in winter and hiking trails in warmer months. The convenience of being just a 30-minute drive (and cable car ride) from Almaty city center makes it easily accessible yet wonderfully secluded. Many reviews highlight the stunning views from rooms and common areas, whether overlooking the slopes or the valley. Accommodation and Comfort: 4/5 Properties like the Shymbulak Medeu Camp offer unique "tent" accommodations that are described as luxurious, clean, and comfortable, with amenities like private bathrooms and strong water pressure. The Shymbulak Resort Hotel features well-appointed rooms, often with a "wooded theme" fitting the ski lodge ambiance. Guests consistently praise the cleanliness of the rooms and the comfortable beds. Heating is generally excellent, a crucial factor in the mountain environment. While some might find rooms slightly compact, the awe-inspiring surroundings more than compensate. Facilities and Amenities: 4/5 Shymbulak offers a range of facilities to enhance your stay. This includes: Restaurants: On-site restaurants serve local and international cuisine. While some find the restaurant prices a bit high or portions small, the convenience of dining right on the mountain is a major plus. Breakfast is often highly rated. Ski/Snowboard Rentals and Schools: For winter sports enthusiasts, there's everything you need right at your doorstep. Cable Cars: The modern cable car system is a highlight in itself, offering stunning views during the ascent. Spa and Wellness (at some properties): Some hotels within the resort may offer spa facilities for relaxation after a day on the slopes or trails. Family-friendly options: Shymbulak is noted for being suitable for families, with facilities like children's rooms and varied slopes. Service and Staff: 4/5 Reviews often commend the staff for being helpful, attentive, and polite. Many mention staff members who speak English, which is a significant advantage for international visitors. While some isolated incidents of communication barriers have been reported, the overall sentiment is positive regarding the service. Value for Money: 4/5 Given the prime location and unique experience, Shymbulak offers good value. While it might be pricier than city accommodations, the unparalleled access to mountain activities and stunning scenery makes it worthwhile for many. Read moreWhen I arrived at Shymbulak, it was a rainy day, with drizzling rain and thick fog enveloping the entire mountain. My heart sank as I thought, “That’s it—tomorrow I’ll only have half a day to explore, and in the evening, I’ll be flying back to Malaysia.” A few days earlier, I had joined a local tour group, but an unpleasant argument with the guide left a sour taste. Now, even the weather in Shymbulak seemed to be against me. I felt disheartened, thinking that this trip was doomed to end on a disappointing note.
But to my surprise, the next morning, the sky cleared up. Even more exciting, it had snowed on the mountains the night before! Yes, early September marks the transition from the heat of summer to the cool of autumn. In the end, the heavens did show me some kindness, granting me the chance to marvel at the majestic snow-capped mountains. The breathtaking scenery made me imagine how wonderful it must be to hike or ski here in winter—surely an unforgettable experience.
Shymbulak Resort Hotel felt like a mountain cabin, perfectly complementing the snowy landscape around it. To my delight, the food at the hotel’s restaurant was at least a third cheaper than outside, and the chef’s skills were exceptional. Every meal I had was delicious, rich with local flavors. If you can stay a few more nights, don't forget to check out the fascinating books on the table in the center of the lobby. They cover the history of Kazakhstan, its wildlife and plants, as well as legendary tales of the nomadic peoples—definitely worth a good read!
Now that I’ve been back in Malaysia for over a month, I occasionally think about the unpleasant incident with the tour guide. When I do, I like to comfort myself with Longfellow’s poem Rainy Day: “Into each life some rain must fall, some days must be dark and dreary.”
Whether in dreams or daily life, whenever I feel stressed, the image of Shymbulak’s snow-covered mountains always appears in my mind, gently reminding me: “Enjoy life—truly enjoy it. If you can embrace nature with your heart in the short time you have, you’ll discover that happiness...
