Let's start with the food. It's about twice as expensive as anything outside expo grounds, and about three times than anything outside Astana. What do you get for overpaying? Well, most likely prepackaged food that does not taste all that great. The number of fast food places in the inner circle of expo most days does not really deserve to be called fast, as it takes forever to "cook" that prepackaged sandwich and throw fries into a frier. Employees of these fine establishments are not particularly acquainted with the concept of customer service. There's about a 50/50 chance you'll get your receipt, and when the cashier forgets you got something, good luck trying to explain you've been waiting for 20 minutes already. Granted, that doesnt happen every time, but I want to emphasize the lack of customer service skills. Another warning, if you get your sandwich and it comes in plastic packaging, make sure they microwave it without the packaging.
Lines are also a very loose concept on expo grounds. And it's not just young people who cut you and pretend that's normal. Old grandmas are just as willing to act extremely rude to you, break the rules, all the while complaining that you didn't offer to let them cut in the first place. Lines in general are disrespected here. People just don't care about them, unless it is you who is doing the cutting, then a chorus of middle aged crowd armed with strollers and screaming babies will surely let you know what a terrible foreigner you are.
The expo itself is an exercise in futility. It is a 3 billion dollar pr stunt that's not exactly paying off.
In terms of pavilions, the death star pavilion is actually pretty cool. The country pavilions range from bad to pretty good, although it is unlikely any of them will blow your mind. The crowds are pretty terrible at following the rules. Every other person thinks they are the ones entitled to the best experience and go about their day without any regard for people around them.

Read moreWas excited for my first World Expo, but was ultimately disappointed by poor quality of international pavilions (which being constructed so late, gave the participating countries very little time to build either an architecturally interesting space or an engaging exhibit). Many simply used films which I could watch on YouTube. Further, the scientific content of the Kazakh pavilion itself was lacklustre in content and I didn't learn much. There is one section on the ground floor that exhibits new advances in CIS science... also, corporate pavilions were ok. Of all, I'd recommend the Turkey and...
