De Basillika is een van de mooiste kerken van Luxemburg. Inmiddels is dit natuurlijk niet meer de kerk die door Willibrordus werd gebouwd maar staat wel op de plek waar zijn kerk vroeger stond. Het graf van Willibrordus is te bezichtigen, en op de dinsdag na pinksteren word er natuurlijk ook gesprongen door Echternach waar de springprocesie begint in het hof van de oude abdij ( tegenwoordig het hof van de middelbare school ) men vervolgens door Echternach springt om te eindigen in de Basillika. De oude abdy is van binnen niet te bezichtigen, deze is als school gesloten voor de toeristen. Ook de l'orangerie behoort tot de Echternacher Lycee en is alleen voor scholieren. Het kleine museum is de moeite waard. Want wie verwacht er dat ruim 100 jaar lang ten tijde van Napoleon er een Porseleinfabriek gevestigd was in de Basillika van Echternach. Vandaar dat je er ook Porselein ziet wat in de kerk gefabriceerd is. Voor de eerste wereldoorlog is de fabriek verdwenen en werd de Basillika weer Basillika. Tijdens de tweede wereldoorlog is de Basillika zwaar gebombardeerd en na de oorlog weder opgebouwd, waarvan we nu anno 2023 het resultaat nog steeds kunnen bezichtigen.

Stunning old Abbey with marvellous old architecture and amazing history. The inside of the Abbey is serene and calming and well worth a visit when in town. There’s a free history museum in the Abbey and also don’t miss the underground ancient crypt to truly go back in time!

Beautiful abbey with incredible architecture. The basilica was amazing and also contains some important historical artefacts. The area is beautiful to walk by, although, unfortunately there is a car park inside it, which takes a little bit away from the experience.

Amazing beautiful place, has two museums (one inside and another one outside that you have to pay €3 cash to enter). We managed to park almost immediately outside the front door of the abbey. St Wilibrord’s story is fascinating and brought to life beautifully here.

Description
The Abbey of Echternach is a Benedictine monastery in the town of Echternach, in eastern Luxembourg. The Abbey was founded in the 7th century by St Willibrord, the patron saint of Luxembourg.
