Basilica of Saint Willibrord — Attraction in Echternach

Basilica from the 11th Century. The interior is very dark despite the few stained glass windows. You can freely visit the white crypt (Merovingian crypt) where the tomb of St. Willibrord is located and do not miss the small museum on the abbey and its famous dancing procession which is located in one of the annexes of the Basilica. Beautiful church, always in awe of the stained glass in churches. Especially the Rose window behind the organ here. There's a very small museum within the church but everything's in French or German only so didn't understand much.

La basilica attuale, a croce latina, è caratterizzata da forme eleganti in pietra arenaria e slanciate verso l'alto, verso le quattro torri campanarie in ciascuno degli angoli, verso il rosone o le vetrate colorate in toni vivaci. La basilica fu fondata nel 698 dal monaco benedettino Villibrordo, vescovo di Utrecht, di cui sono conservate le reliquie all'interno. Il monastero da lui diretto fu l'edificio più antico del Granducato. Nel 714 fu battezzato qui Pipino III detto il Breve, padre di Carlo Magno. Sul sito dell'abbazia, dove era presente una casa romana, furono costruite nel tempo altre chiese, in seguito ai segni lasciati dai conflitti bellici. Il risultato è un insieme di stili piuttosto consueto, che passa dal romanico al barocco.
