One of the few things you can actually do in Sandakan city is to walk the Heritage Trail and learn more about the British North Borneo capital at the time ❤
• Sandakan was founded on 21st of June 1879 by the British William B. Prayer and in 1884 became the official capital of the British North Borneo who ruled Sabah between 1881 - 1946
• Nearly totally destroyed by the end of WWII , the city we see today was reconstructed from ruins
• The traces of the past can still be seen following the heritage trail. In all honesty, there is nothing impressive to see today, but you can learn about the history and get nostalgic along thanks to the information displayed in front of each heritage stop
• Sandakan Heritage Trail has 11 stops but there are maps and signs to guide you around 》Masjid Jamik (Town Mosque) 》William Pryer Monument 》100 Steps 》Agnes Keith's House 》Remains of The Old Staircase 》Goddess of Mercy Chinese Temple (Kun Yam Temple) 》St. Michael's and All Angels Church 》Sam Sing Kung Chinese Temple 》Malaysia Fountain 》Wisma Warisan 》Padang Bandaran Sandakan

We stayed in the area a day before our scheduled trip to the Kinabantangan River and had a day and enough to enjoy what the place has to offer for us. After a filling breakfast from our hotel, we went on a morning walk to which we encountered the map of the heritage trail. It has about 11 landmarks that you can visit on foot travelling from one side of Sandakan to the other. It was an interesting and enriching journey where we got to see interesting sights but also learn about the past and present of Sandakan. Although some places were left in less than ideal state, the trail still has its significance for locals and tourists alike. I hope that the heritage trail get more care and attention as history has always been an important aspect...
