Moments in Malta Malta is an island located between Europe and Africa, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. There are two main spoken languages: Maltese and English. Must-see places in Malta: 🏰 Valetta: This is the capital of Malta and is sometimes called an “open-air museum.” The entire city is recognized by UNESCO for its historical and cultural value. The buildings are protected and their architectural integrity has been well preserved. The city truly comes alive at night. Restaurants and bars set up tables and chairs on the sidewalk and steps and live music is heard on every street corner. 🇲🇹 Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua): These cities sit directly across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. To get there, you can take a ferry or luzzu (traditional fishing boat); I’d recommend taking a luzzu; they’re operated by locals and cost about 2 Euro per person for a quick 5 minute ride. If you only make it to one of the three cities, choose Vittoriosa, where the Fort Saint Angelo is located. This is where the Great Siege of 1565 occurred when the Knights of St. John and the Maltese defeated the Turks. 🏰 Mdina: This place is a must! It’s an ancient walled city and is a mix of medieval and baroque architecture. You literally feel like you’re stepping back in time. If you’re a GOT fan, you don’t want to miss this! 🗝 Rabat: This is a neighboring town to Mdina. It’s known for its impressive catacombs and archeological sites. 💧If you want to see beautiful blue water, visit St. Peter’s Pool or Mellieha Bay (just know there will likely be big crowds). 💦 Gozo: the second largest Island of the Maltese archipelago. You can charter a boat or take a 45-minute ferry to get here. The main attraction is the Blue Lagoon, but it has become a tourist trap and is flooded with crowds. Instead, go to the Crystal Lagoon in Comino. 🗿If you want to see a monument that’s older than Stonehenge and the Great Egyptian Pyramids, visit the Megalithic Temples of Malta which date back to 3600-2500 B.C. ✈️ Save this reel for your next visit! #malta #valletta #europe #europeanadventure #summerineurope #globetrotting #goexplore

It's amazing what exists beneath our feet! Pricing signs advertising the site are a bit out of date (now it's 6eu per adult). Biggest gripe is that the experience benefits enormously from an audio guide but it's far from obvious where to find it (small A4 Red sheet on the wall of the first room before the sliding door) but could do with being posted much more frequently around the site. As for the site itself: a decent introduction exhibit before being let loose into the catacombs yourself. The jewel in the crown is the first and largest accessible catacomb which was genuinely impressive. After this we discovered there is about 22 of these catacombs (all appear to be smaller than the first) but access tends to be quite limited and a few (5 or 6) were entirely closed. Once you cross the road into the second half it is much more peaceful and access to many of the smaller 'family sized' tombs are more the flavour of the tombs. I recall reading there is around 2000m of catacombs in total but I think we really get about a fifth of that either for safety reasons or limited space accessing some portions. Anyway it's really worth seeing and you get a good bit of cardio accessing and leaving the latter tombs. Architecturally considerate planning gives a familiar feeling above the ground which contrasts nicely with the nature of the hollows beneath your feet.

Very interesting place to visit which is rich in history. Good value for money in my opinion, given how long you can spend there if you choose to see absolutely everything. We went after walking around Mdina for a while so found the stairs up and down lots of chambers tiring after a while. The audio guide is through an app and is easy to use. This isn't explained to you though. Bring earphones for this reason. After the first 2 rooms, you go outside and from here, there isn't any real signposting as to where you should go. We had fun just wandering around until we found the entrance to the catacombs. The catacombs themselves are generally well lit but dark in places. If you can manage stairs, you can navigate everywhere though so places are so narrow, it can only be single file. This sometimes leads to a bit of traffic if people are going opposite ways. In an ideal world, everyone would use the audio guide which does well to direct you in a specific direction. Clearer signage needed perhaps. It gets a bit repetitive after a while unless you're really interested in all aspects of this part of culture. 2 toilet facilities, both clean. Gift shop.

These extensive and very accessible catacombs were a surprise. I’ve been to catacombs before, in Rome, and the access was very tightly controlled. Here, a ticket gives you freedom to roam 22 (I think) individual catacombs at your own pace. Mainly Jewish, Pagan and Christian, these catacombs offer something for everyone. Learn about different funerary rites along the way. Access to catacombs is via small staircases and, once inside, headroom is often restricted. Walkways can be tight as well, so perhaps not something for the larger amongst us (height or weight). Individual catacombs display capacity and any size restrictions clearly. The site is bisected by a road, which must be crossed to continue your exploration. The second half is much larger and includes toilets, a gift shop and a number of charming stray cats. Remarkably, these catacombs were only rediscovered and made accessible relatively recently. Photos are allowed, but no flash. Watch your head

Was REALLY excited about visiting this place. It's €6 per adult and you get to wander around at your own pace. The biggest issue here is that it's not well lit. There are many information boards dotted around down inside the catacombs but without a torch or phone light you can't see what is written due to the poor lighting down there. I am 5ft 11 and I think I banged my head about 7 times, hopefully I don't have any lasting memory issues. I am 5ft 11 and I think I banged my head about 7 times, hopefully I don't have any lasting memory issues. I am 5ft 11....... But in all seriousness, it's worth a visit but just don't go here expecting to see corpses on display, all there is to see is some empty burial plots carved out of the rock. It's still fascinating, and I would suggest that you take a look if you're in the area, just mind your head. Also, mind your head. Oh, I forgot to mention, mind your head 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Description
St. Paul's Catacombs are some of the most prominent features of Malta's early Christianity archeology. The archeological clearing of the site has revealed an extensive system of underground galleries and tombs dating from the third to the eighth centuries CE.
