Baccus Baccus, “the God of wine and giver of ecstasy.” Baccus Restaurant in Mdina, Gozo, has been serving up just that for almost forty years. Located in the ancient capital of Gozo, it once was the gunpowder magazine for the old fortress of Mdina. The building is situated between a 1st-century Roman wall and a 10th-century Arab wall. When you walk into this marvelous restaurant, you can feel the history. We have been there several times for anniversaries, birthdays, and just when we want a special treat. The food is simply fabulous. From fresh-caught Sea Bream to succulent Filet Mignon, you will be delighted with any choice on the menu. We both have our favorite starters: traditional Caesar Salad for me and Mediterranean Aljotta soup for her (fish soup). My partner loves the short ribs—tender, juicy, and fall-off-the-bone good. I love the entire menu, so it is easy for me. The Lamb Saddle is cooked to perfection. Maltese Braised Rabbit is a dish many people shy away from; try it, and you’ll love it. You can never go wrong with a perfectly cooked filet. It's probably the best steak on the island. Baccus is the God of wine and Baccus Restaurant delivers with an astonishing wine list for the region and worldwide. They have a huge banquet room that accommodates a 1000-person reception or seats 500 people for your perfect wedding venue. Excellent service is available either in the cozy confines of the old gunpowder magazine or outside in the lovely garden area. Baccus is the perfect place for you and your special someone. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., seven...
Read moreMy partner and I recently had the pleasure of dining at Bacchus in Mdina, Malta, and it was an experience fit for royalty. From the moment we stepped through the door, we were treated like a king and queen. The service was impeccable, with servers who were not only knowledgeable about the menu but also exceedingly helpful with their recommendations.
The food at Bacchus was nothing short of extraordinary. Each dish was a delight to the senses, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavor. The wine selection was impressive, offering a diverse array of choices that perfectly complemented our meal.
The ambience of Bacchus is one of its standout features. The charming setting, enhanced by dim lighting, created the perfect romantic atmosphere. The soft, chilled-out music in the background further added to the serene and intimate environment, making it an ideal spot for a special evening.
While our overall experience was exceptional, there was one aspect that left us somewhat disappointed. The portion size of the lobster was underwhelming, especially considering the 38 Euro price tag. Being served only half a lobster did not meet our expectations for such a premium dish. For that price, a whole lobster would have been more appropriate.
Despite this minor issue, our evening at Bacchus was truly memorable, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a romantic and exquisite dining...

I was at this place last night as part of a large group, and it was simply disgusting. While the location is excellent and the building is nice, it was a horrible experience. The food was hospital food — and not of a good hospital. And service was abismal.
As we sat, we waited and waited and waited…. Then some dishes came containing some pasta and something red / brown. I asked the waiter what it was and he replied “Sorry, I am not the cook” ! It seemed to be pasta with some sort of beans — but no way to know what it really was.
Then a man came asking “fish or meat ?”, referring to the main course. He didn’t say “good evening”, or “we have two options tonight”, or anything. He just said rather rudely “fish or meat ?”, like in a hospital or primary school. No specification of what kind of fish or what kind of meat, or accompanied by what. Of course I didn’t dare ask, as I would probably have had the same reply as for the pasta.
We waited and waited and waited. Then my fish came, it was small and without any taste, there was something green on it, maybe tasteless pesto, not sure, but no way to know what it was. No taste, no presentation, I think my school canteen some decades ago was much better.
I left and went to have dinner separately...
