Domvs Romana (Roman House).

This Roman villa was owned by a rich family in the 1st to 2nd century BC, its mosaic floors were accidentally discovered in 1881 whilst tree planting in Howard Gardens, with excavations being carried out between 1920 and 1924. It is thought its wealthy owners were of a high social status as they had two marble statues of the Royal Emporer Claudius' family, maybe he was the island's Governor? A museum of artefacts found around the villa and surrounding area were exhibited in a museum, opened on the site in 1882 and it now houses other pieces from the Roman period found elsewhere on the island.

The villa had fallen into ruins over the years, but luckily with the mosaics being covered they have survived quite intact. Limestone columns and a cornice have been found, which would have been part of the grand villa's internal structure. Unfortunately some ruins were destroyed by the British in 1899 when they cut a road through to the Museum railway station, with no records kept of any discoveries they made during the works, sadly...

Very friendly lady greeted me upon entry into this "must see" small museum for any Roman mosaics lover. Though the display cabinets and "info walls" are a little dated, it was all well curated. The mosaic floors are not the best examples you would ever see, in terms of preservation or conservation, if you follow in the footsteps of the Romans around the world as a hobby. However, the drinking doves motif here, was very popular in Roman poetry and is mentioned in the historic writings of the period. It is disappointing that the ruins outside are not accessible, perhaps through some sort of suspended walkway and more information offered. There are decent and clean facilities inside which is a plus as they are a little bit challenging in Mdina next door. Small but interesting...

Domvs Romano Domvs Romano, meaning Roman house, was discovered in 1882 by landscapers. It is believed to be from the first century BC. It was built as an aristocratic townhouse within the Roman city of Melite. The mosaics found inside rival those found in Pompeii or Sicily. The museum is well laid out and allows you to view the magical mosaic floors with the peristyle arranged around the main room floor. Part of one of the original columns is still there. The house is located just outside of the walled city of Mdina in Rabat, Malta. This is a Heritage Malta site. Admission is six Euro for Adults, Seniors and children twelve to seventeen are €4.50 and youngsters six to eleven are €3.00. Their hours are Tuesday through Sunday, 9 AM to 5 PM.
