The Pyramid of the Moon is one of the highlights of Teotihuacan, located at the end of the Avenue of the Dead. Although climbing the pyramid is no longer allowed, the views from the base and the walk leading up to it are impressive. The historical vibe of the entire site is powerful. you’re literally walking through ancient history. You can get here by bus from Mexico City (about 1 hour and 45 minutes) or join a guided tour (which usually includes your tickets). If going on your own, tickets can be bought at the gate or online, both options are easy. A few tips: - Avoid weekends and holidays as it gets very crowded and hot. - 100% bring water and snacks. there’s little shade and lots of walking. - Be prepared for lots of souvenir stalls inside the complex.

My visit to Teotihuacan's Pyramid of the Moon was utterly captivating. Standing at the northern end of the Avenue of the Dead, it offers a distinct, almost ethereal beauty compared to its larger sibling. While not as tall, its graceful proportions and position on higher ground meant incredible views of the entire archaeological site, with the Pyramid of the Sun perfectly framed in the distance. I imagined ancient rituals unfolding in the plaza below, the echoes of a vibrant civilization resonating through time. Climbing the accessible platforms offered a profound sense of connection to this mysterious culture, making it an unforgettable exploration of Mexico's ancient heart.

Went on the 2nd day of their reopening a couple of weeks ago. While they don’t allow anyone to climb during the pandemic, it was still incredible to be able to see the ruins. Hire a guide to see Teotihuacán! It’s so worth it!! Tip: wear a hat and sunscreen. I ignored my guide thinking I would be ok on a mild, cloudy day with just sunscreen on my face. Wrong. I came back burned on my nose, back and head. Tip: bring lots of snacks and water if you don’t want junk food snacks they sell there. Even though we couldn’t climb any ruins, we still took 4.5 hours to walk and enjoy the entire grounds.

This is one of the must stops while visiting Mexico City or the surrounding. The two pyramids the Moon and the Sun both are impressive and they are different heights to consider. The moon pyramid is easy to climb; there is a rope in the middle so you can hold on to just in case you lose your balance on your way up or down. The sun on the other hand is harder to climb and specially going down since the steps are not all even and there are spaces where there is nothing to hold on to. On both of these you can see the surroundings and since there is no buildings around they are impressive to be on them. I took a guided tour and our guide told us about them but did not go up with us. You can take plenty of pictures or video but just be careful since the floors or stairs are not all even. I am certain that with time they got uneven but they are still are awesome. Feel free to just relax on them since you are not limited on the time you are there. There are also plenty of vendors all around if you consider buying a gift to take home. One suggestion is to take your time climbing specially if you are...

The Pyramid of the Moon is the second largest building in Teotihuacan after the Pyramid of the Sun. The Pyramid of the Moon is located in the northern part of Teotihuacan and it mimics the contours of Cerro Gordo. Some have called it Tenan which in Nahuatl means "mother or protective stone." The Pyramid of the Moon covers a structure older than the Pyramid of the Sun which existed prior to 200 A. D.

The Pyramid's construction between 200 and 450 A.D. completed the bilateral symmetry of the temple complex. A slope in front of the staircase gives access to the Avenue of the Dead, a platform atop the pyramid was used to conduct ceremonies in honor of Chalchiuhtlicue, the goddess of water and of the moon. This platform and the sculpture found at the pyramid's bottom are thus dedicated to...
