Looking through the reviews, it appears that quite a few people are accidentally rating the tourist trap next door, so be aware: this is NOT the place with all the face-painting 🤣. We went to Metzli on a quiet Wednesday around lunch time, and were the only customers there for most of our meal. From talking to the waiter and the chef, who are co-owners, it’s clear that this is a family business they care deeply about. It shows in the way they treat their customers, the taste, presentation, and temperature of the food, and the fact that the kitchen and bathroom are SPOTLESS even compared to some of the “nicest” restaurants I’ve seen on multiple trips to Mexico. Everything we got tasted super fresh, light (ie. not dripping in grease), and comforting, like a carefully prepared home-cooked meal. Some of the dishes were simpler in flavor, like the “fried chicken tacos” (the tortillas are fried, not the actual chicken), but this was a GOOD thing — the simplicity of the dish perfectly balanced the amazing smoky salsa. The tortilla soup was also a winner, as were the chicharrón and guacamole. Also, one of the only meals on my trip that actually made my stomach feel...
Read moreThe location is lovely, and it's literally right in front of the pyramid of the moon. They have vegetarian options as well, which is hard to find in Teotihuacan. You have to protect yourself from being scammed though. I was told something would be 120 pesos, and the person tried to sell a soup+fajita combo to me for 190 pesos. I told him 'una fajita solamente por favor' and he still brought soup. I told him I didn't want soup and he took it back. Later, he tried to charge me 140 pesos, but I reminded him that initially he had said 120, and then he indeed charged me 120 pesos. This happens a lot here, where someone tells you one price, and then charges you higher once you pull the money out. Decent food, but the server seemed a little hostile after I told him I never ordered the soup. The vegetables were cooked very nicely, and the salsa was tasty as well. I'd say the beans need work though, they weren't that tasty. And the portion of rice was very small. Overall I'd give the experience a 3.5, but I rounded up to 4 since it's right next to the Pyramid of the Moon and they have pleasant...
Read moreMeztli is a fabulous family-owned, small resturaunt near Teotihuacan with DELICIOUS food! We celebrated my best friend's birthday there yesterday, and they surprised her with "Las Mañanitas" and a free, fabulous desert. I have lived in Mexico for 30 years, and this was honestly the best mole I have ever had! Others in my group loved the arrachera Meztli and the pescado veracruzano. The owners are delightful people who maintain a beautiful resturaunt with outstanding food and service in a beautiful location. They also speak English, which is helpful for lots of foreigners. I could not more highly recommend...
