I had a chance to give a look of Ifrane in the beautiful morning, the little Switzerland in Morocco, before I visited FEZ.
In the language of Berbers, the “Ifrane” means “Cave”, and here even in summer, the temperature is cool and pleasant. It is completely isolated from the heat and hustle and bustle of the outside world, as if entering a European alpine garden city.
Located at an altitude of about 1650 meters, this mountain town has a very distinct European style. The wide boulevards, the European-style red-roofed cabins with a strong sense of fairy tale, and the European-style lakeside park are the main town images of Ifrane.
At that time, French colonists took a fancy to the comfortable alpine climate of the Atlas Mountains and built Ifrane in the 1930s. The main purpose of building the city was to provide a relaxing summer retreat for the European colonists who stayed in the hot colony all year round.
It’s very interesting that when compared with foreign tourists who prefer to visit the noisy and lively markets in the old Arab city, Moroccans prefer to visit Ifrane, an isolated mountain city when traveling domestically.

It is located over 5,000 feet above the Sea Level in the Middle Atlas region. I mean the Atlas Mountains are a treat and this village is like icing on top of the cake. It has flowers, plazas, cafes, restaurants and hotels. I saw this village not in the heaviest of winter but near spring and the flowers are blooming. This is the place where wealthy Moroccan’s come for vacations. You would notice that people dress very fashionable. It is also a place where students come and work and play. Enjoy this village. There are hotels where you can stay overnight. So that you know, the French built this village so that the colonial powers could go an relax from the heat...around 1929.
