De Gouwekerk — Attraction in Gouda

The Gouwekerk was built in the early 18th century but was burned down a few decades later. In the 1850's a new church was placed with a new name: St. Jozefkerk. It got stuck stuck into cunstruction hell untill the early 20th century when it received its current name 'Gouwekerk'

The Dutch evangelical Johan Maasbracht bought the church in the 70's. He sold the church on Christmas day in 2018 to a commercial enterprise that temporarily placed an ice rink in it and various commercial markets.

De Gouwekerk aan de Hoge Gouwe in Gouda heet officieel Sint-Jozefkerk, maar is 'gewoon' door de Goudse bevolking zo gaan heten. Hij werd door de Goudse architect C.P.W. Dessing ontworpen en gebouwd van 1902/1904, en werd een Rijksmonument in 1978. Hij was toen al door de Pinkstergemeente in gebruik genomen (Johan Maasbach nam hem voor een gulden over van de RK-parochie), en in 2000 grondig verbouwd. Vanaf 2001 staat de kerk er echter fraai maar functieloos bij. Het is een neogotische kruiskerk met een zeshoekige opengewerkte spitse toren. Met zijn 80 meter het hoogste punt in de stad. Als er af en toe een tentoonstelling wordt gehouden krijg je de kans om hem te bezoeken. Een verrassing mag ik wel zeggen, vooral door de bakstenen constructie, zeker in het fraaie neo-gotische dak, en het licht in de kerk.
