My visit to Sint Pieter Fort and the North Caves at Maastricht Underground was truly an unforgettable experience! From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the stunning historical site and its fascinating stories.
Our tour guide, Ton, was absolutely fantastic. He was not only incredibly knowledgeable but also passionate about the history and significance of the fort and caves. His engaging storytelling and deep insights made the tour both educational and entertaining. Ton’s ability to bring history to life is commendable, and he ensured that everyone in our group, regardless of age, had a wonderful time.
The tour itself was well-organized and offered great value for money. We explored the intriguing tunnels of the North Caves, learning about their historical uses and the various artworks hidden within. The cool, dark caves provided a stark contrast to the sunny fort above, making for a diverse and exciting experience.
Sint Pieter Fort, with its impressive structure and panoramic views of Maastricht, was another highlight. Ton’s explanations of the fort’s strategic importance and the events that took place there added depth to our visit.
Overall, this tour exceeded our expectations. It was both fun and informative, and we left with a greater appreciation for Maastricht’s rich history. I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. Don’t miss out on this gem of...
Read moreAn amazing place! It is so fascinating to see all the paintings, reliefs and graffiti that people left there centuries ago. The guided tour takes about an hour, is also available in English, and it is very interesting to hear about the history of this place and anecdotes like the one about the monks who didn't find their way back out again and keep on wandering through the caves until today. At one point during the tour our guide offered the choice to either go ahead with the lamps or to stay behind until the people with the lamps were away and walk the next part through complete darkness without the slightest glimmer of light. Of course I stayed behind and I can recommend it to everyone to experience real darkness and get an (albeit tiny) impression on how it must have been for those unfortunate people who ran out of candles/oil/whatever and had to try their best to find the right way and make it out alive out of this labyrinth of thousands of tunnels back to...
Read moreReally well worth the effort to visit. From the Waldpark, this is only a 15 minute walk, although for the less mobile, the hilly finish may prove slightly challenging. From the bar area where the tickets are purchased, there is a decent panorama of Maastricht, but this pales in comparison to the one that is afforded from the top of the fort. The English-speaking guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and encourages questions. Be prepared to cling a number of steep steps and inclines! Tour takes a total of 30 minutes or so, but gives a good insight into the history of Maastricht and the surrounding area. There are cases and Kazemates that can also be visited...
