What happens when you try to covet the Martinitower of your neighbours in Groningen? An incidental leaning tower of Pisa in the Netherlands is born. When the Frysian people discovered that Groningen was building Martinitower, they wanted a bigger one in Leeuwarden. So in 1529, work started on a sand hill to build a bigger one. Unfortunately, The top of the tower became displaced horizontally by 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) from the centre. This didn't stop the people of Leeuwarden from trying to correct it but ultimately failed. They stopped building the complete church and left the tower standing unfinished at a height 39 metres (127.95 feet) and 183 climbing steps. This event made quite a laughing matter with the citizens of Groningen as they felt that the people of Leeuwarden are somewhat inadequate. Attending an outdoor party at Oldehove in Leeuwarden was an amazing experience! The setting was perfect, with the iconic leaning tower as a backdrop and plenty of open space to dance and relax. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, with great music, lighting, and a friendly crowd that made the night unforgettable. The warm summer weather made it even better, allowing everyone to enjoy the outdoor vibes late into the evening. The organizers did a great job with everything—from food and drink options to sound quality. If you’re in Leeuwarden during summer, I’d highly recommend checking out an event at Oldehove. Perfect for a fun night out with friends!

Its More Tilted than Leaning Tower of Pisa. the view is awesome from the top . we took the stairs. You will definitely experince the tiltedness of the building . Its in city center . you can go by lift to certain height. also some holographic presentation was given .The Oldehove is a leaning and unfinished church tower in the medieval centre of the Dutch city of Leeuwarden. Oldehove is also the name of an artificial mound on which in the late 9th century a church dedicated to Saint Vitus was built. Taking a walk back in time was so interesting. This was a good visit with easy access from the underground parking. Heard the bells chime and had the children ring the bell in the foyer. Thanks to the staff for that special privilege. Views from the top are splendid. Saw the set up for an event in the area in front of the tower. Appreciated the lift on the way down! The staff were friendly and very helpful. They had lots of knowledge and could answer our myriad of questions.

Je hoeft echt niet naar Pisa te gaan om een scheve toren te zien ! In 1529 startte de bouw van de Oldehove . Het was de bedoeling dat naast de Oldehove een nieuwe kerk zou verrijzen . Deze moest de oude Sint - Vituskerk vervangen. Maar daar is nooit iets van gekomen. Het zat bouwmeester Jacob van Aaken niet mee , want al tijdens de bouw zakte de toren scheef . Er is nog geprobeerd op de scheve onderbouw loodrecht verder te metselen , maar helaas zonder het gewenste resultaat. De bouw is in 1533 stopgezet en nooit meer hervat. De toren had minstens twee keer zo hoog moeten worden . Bijzondere functies heeft de Oldehove nooit gehad. Toch is de toren één van de belangrijkste symbolen van de stad geworden. Leeuwarders zijn trots op hun Oldehove . '' als ik de Oldehove niet kan zien , dan voel ik mij onevenwichtig '' is een bekend gezegde in de stad. een paar feiten: hoogte toren : 39 meter zonder houten opbouw, met opbouw 48 meter aantal treden : 183 scheefstand toren: onder 1.99 meter en over het geheel 1.68 meter
