What happens when you try to covet the Martinitower of your neighbours in Groningen? An incidental leaning tower of Pisa in the Netherlands is born.
When the Frysian people discovered that Groningen was building Martinitower, they wanted a bigger one in Leeuwarden. So in 1529, work started on a sand hill to build a bigger one.
Unfortunately, The top of the tower became displaced horizontally by 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) from the centre. This didn't stop the people of Leeuwarden from trying to correct it but ultimately failed. They stopped building the complete church and left the tower standing unfinished at a height 39 metres (127.95 feet) and 183 climbing steps.

The staff was incredibly friendly, genuine, interested and helpful giving us advice over the city: where to go, what to do, information points and the best of the vibes!
The place itself is interesting. The panoramic view from the top is beautiful (specially on sunny days).
If you don't like going up hundreds of stairs to get to the top, you can get to the first exhibition room with the lift.
I also found the archeological exposition in the reception room really interesting.
The site is old, was a "failure" but remained against all odds and reminds us that nature is stronger than human plans ;).
