What happens when you try to covet the Martinitower of your neighbours in Groningen? An incidental leaning tower of Pisa in the Netherlands is born.

When the Frysian people discovered that Groningen was building Martinitower, they wanted a bigger one in Leeuwarden. So in 1529, work started on a sand hill to build a bigger one.

Unfortunately, The top of the tower became displaced horizontally by 2 metres (6 ft 7 in) from the centre. This didn't stop the people of Leeuwarden from trying to correct it but ultimately failed. They stopped building the complete church and left the tower standing unfinished at a height  39 metres (127.95 feet) and 183 climbing steps.

This event made quite a laughing matter with the citizens of Groningen as they felt that the people of Leeuwarden are somewhat inadequate. A feeling that is still justified today in the mind of the citizens of...

I'm so glad I found this odd place!

The staff was incredibly friendly, genuine, interested and helpful giving us advice over the city: where to go, what to do, information points and the best of the vibes!

The place itself is interesting. The panoramic view from the top is beautiful (specially on sunny days).

If you don't like going up hundreds of stairs to get to the top, you can get to the first exhibition room with the lift.

I also found the archeological exposition in the reception room really interesting.

The site is old, was a "failure" but remained against all odds and reminds us that nature is stronger than human plans ;).

Groetjes to the friendly woman in the reception and the meneer who gave us all those useful tips!

Tot de...

Attending an outdoor party at Oldehove in Leeuwarden was an amazing experience! The setting was perfect, with the iconic leaning tower as a backdrop and plenty of open space to dance and relax. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, with great music, lighting, and a friendly crowd that made the night unforgettable.

The warm summer weather made it even better, allowing everyone to enjoy the outdoor vibes late into the evening. The organizers did a great job with everything—from food and drink options to sound quality. If you’re in Leeuwarden during summer, I’d highly recommend checking out an event at Oldehove. Perfect for a fun night out...
