Fort Amsterdam is an interesting historical site, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The location offers great views of the surrounding area, and you can definitely feel the historical significance of the fort. However, I felt there could have been more information or interactive elements to make the experience more engaging.
The site itself is a bit small, and while it's nice to walk around, there isn’t much to do once you've seen the main structures. Some parts of the fort could use better maintenance, as a few areas felt a bit rundown.
There were no staff on-site, so there wasn’t anyone to provide information or context about the history of the fort. It would have been nice to have some displays or signs to give more insight into the fort’s past.
Overall, it’s a decent stop for history buffs or anyone in the area, but it might not be worth a special trip unless you're really interested in...
Read moreThis is located on the outside edge of the property for the Divi resort. That means you need to park outside the guardhouse and walk in.
The walk is downhill to the resort, then uphill through the resort's room buildings. When you reach the edge of the property it is up a steeper part for about .1 miles to the ruins.
There is a wall on the west side with cannon replicas. They are very good. Pretty much everything else has been destroyed by the hurricane that came through in 2017.
There are signs that show a layout of how the fort looked. There are 2 building shells that you can look at.
The views from the fort are beautiful and there is a pelican nesting area adjacent to the fort property. We didn't see any when we were there.
Even with the steep walk, and warm temperatures, the breeze was nice, which helped. Overall, it was...
Read moreIt was quite an adventure finding this fort. The reason for this is that you have to actually walk through a resort to get to your destination and tell the guard posted at the entrance of the resort that you want to go visit the fort. Park in front of the resort. There are signs showing you in which direction to go to see the real ones. Be prepared to walk up a steep hill with no ramps or stairs and no shade. This is certainly not the place to visit if you have a walking disability or are in a wheelchair.we did not find the guide and there are only a few small plaques explaining a few things about the Fort. Not much to see but the views from up there are great. Some of the cannons are replicas. On the way back down you will pass a pool and restaurant. They do have washrooms on the sidewalk which you can use. The fort and...
