Zierikzee — Attraction in Schouwen-Duiveland

The Nobelpoort . located at Korte Nobelstraat 41, 4301 HM Zierikzee, Netherlands, is one of the three remaining medieval city gates in Zierikzee, a historic city in the province of Zeeland. It is the oldest of the three, dating back to the first quarter of the 14th century, with construction likely beginning around 1350, following the siege of Zierikzee by the Flemish in 1304. The gate was part of the city’s enhanced defenses and is a well-preserved example of medieval architecture, featuring a rectangular central tower with two flanking round towers, each about 35–40 meters tall and topped with slate-covered spires.

Built using Tournai stone and brick in a Flemish bond pattern, the Nobelpoort retains its original character, with robust masonry, battlements, and narrow shooting windows designed for defense, particularly for archers. It originally had a wooden drawbridge, replaced by a dam in 1685. The gate’s name may derive from a local noble family, a medieval coin called the “nobel,” or, according to folklore, two noble sisters, Anna and Maria, one of whom was hunchbacked, possibly influencing the slightly crooked design of one tower’s spire. Dendrochronological research from the 1990s confirmed the wood in the gate’s roof structure dates to around 1360.

The Nobelpoort was restored in 1979 and is now in excellent condition, serving as a popular photo spot and a key monument in Zierikzee’s historic center. It is not a residential or commercial address but a protected heritage site (Rijksmonument...

Проїжджаючи повз Zierikzee, ми побачили дві вежі з входом між ними. Ми подумали, що це - просто церква чи давня вежа. Але Nobelpoort - це набагато більше, ніж просто вежа, це - ворота у місто, початок прекрасного міста, а для нас - надзвичайно приємних вражень і досвіду. Плануючи коротку зупинку під час нашої подорожі тут на 5хв, ми провели в Zierikzee 5 годин. Нам дуже сподобалося! Ми гуляли містом, пообідали, відвідали Stadhuismuseum і виставку "50 greatest wildlife photographs National geographic" у Nieuwekeek. Населення Zierikzee - дуже привітне. Alleen jammer dat je er niets extra over kan lezen als je geen smartphone hebt (ik heb enkel het basisplaatje gezien dat aan de toren hangt.)

ook wilden we met de kinderen naast de toren in het gras iets eten, maar er was één bankje dat volzet was. Daarom moesten we op het gras zitten, wat op zich niet erg is, maar dit werd gebruikt door de bewoners als hondenuitlaatplaats, dus niet echt proper!

Je moet best wel even stappen vanuit het centrum tot de toren, terwijl je met de auto ook kan langsrijden en dan heb je hem ook gezien.
