Recently shifted into central city, finding a good fish’n chip shop for the occasional must have, we had tried several around the city and luckily found this place ‘Rutland Street fnc’s’. First time there we ordered our food over the phone, arrived there 10-15mins later, paid for meal and given our number. 30-35mins later (around a 45min wait in total, it was very busy, full shop and for good reason as follows!) we finally got our order and headed back to our apartment in town. 45mins was for us quite a long wait however once we got home and opened up our hot paper wrapped meal we were really impressed with how fresh, crispy and golden fried our food was, I mean it was just dam good looking, smelt absolutely like fncs should smell but fresh, not like some places it can smell ‘greasy’ and old or kind of bland but once we took first bite into the fish, omg! Wow!! Hot, crispy and delicious, well cooked, as was the entire meal of chips, fish and hotdogs, also not over the top greasy. Was seriously well worth the long wait, as the team at ‘Rutland street Fish and Chips’ have to be by far the best in town. I haven’t tasted fncs like this since i was a kid, that special treat was delicious! Perhaps they could give a heads up in wait times when they can but seriously, honestly was just the best we’ve had and have made this our absolute ‘go to’ for that classic kiwi takeaway meal 10/10!! Thanks so much, great value too, hard to beat...
Read moreLet me share something with you... I live 5 minutes north of Christchurch city centre and have tried every fish and chip shop within a 20 minute radius of me. Rutland has a secret that they don't advertise. You can ask them for battered whole fillets. You may have noticed that these days when you buy a piece of fish it is actually a fillet sliced along the length. Almost all fish and chip shops do this resulting in a thinner half fillet piece with ample batter. Rutlands standard pieces are also like this but you have the option of buying cooked whole fillets which they price by weight. So a whole fillet may cost you twice as much or more, but they are so much better! If you usually get a standard piece each, try sharing a whole fillet between two. I highly recommend the whole fillet battered blue cod, they are massive and thick and delicious, with a nice thin batter! On top of this, they take very good care of their oil. As a result, everything comes out of their fryers golden brown and crispy. Their humble plain sausage deserves a special mention too, they are big and meaty. Top marks, job done, best fish and chip shop north side...
Read moreVery disappointed to watch frozen fish after frozen fish dropped into the fryer. You could tell as well when eating the fish. I hadn't told my partner that her breaded blue cod was cooked from frozen and she commented that it didn't taste very fresh. Shame as the chips were nice and the staff were really friendly, but with a number of other chipperies offering fresh fish that they crumb themselves before cooking I'll be...
