You can walk up to the gannet colony from the beach or drive up. If driving, take the road up near the roundabout and keep an eye out for the gannet colony sign. There are a few parking spots at the top and it has a nice view of the beach below. There is a pathway that leads to two different lookout sites. One is close to the carpark and the other closer to the beach walkway. Both have stairs to get to the lookout. The birds are so close to the lookout points. You can see them sitting, walking and interacting with each other. The closeness gives you a feel for their size. It was a nice little walk to both lookouts and it had a nice view over the water, along with the nesting colony. It is worth the walk up to see these amazing birds up close...

Overall, I highly recommend the Muriwai Gannet Colony Lookout for anyone looking to experience the beauty of New Zealand's west coast and get up close and personal with these amazing birds. It's an experience you...
Read moreA breathtaking beach at Muriwai. Black sand and good surf. Locals fish from the big flat rocks but you'd need to take care and watch the tides and waves. Take a walk up the hill to the Gannet colony to see the birds and read their story of migration. It's like being in a David Attenborugh movie. You can watch the birds fly in to hundreds of chick's and go straight yo their own baby. We visited in January and there were new chick's and older half grown birds. Beautiful colours, lots of chirping and a bit smelly but it's all part of the experience which is not to be missed ots of parking and...
