I took my friends to Muriwai Surf School for their first-ever surfing experience, and it turned out to be one of the best days ever! From the moment we arrived, the energy was amazing—welcoming, encouraging, and super fun. The team at Muriwai Surf School knows how to make beginners feel comfortable and excited rather than nervous, which made all the difference.

Our instructor, Jake, was absolutely fantastic! He was patient, knowledgeable, and had the perfect mix of technical skill and good vibes. He broke everything down in a way that was easy to understand, making sure we felt confident before heading into the water. Even when we wiped out (a lot!), he kept cheering us on, helping us improve, and making sure we were having the best time.

By the end of the lesson, we were actually catching waves! None of us expected to stand up on the board so soon, but thanks to Jake’s guidance and enthusiasm, we did—and it felt incredible! The whole experience was such a fun and memorable adventure, and we couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to surfing.

When I first walked down to watch the waves waiting for me at Muriwai Beach, I never imagined I’d actually be able to surf them. But Muriwai Surf School proved me wrong. It was my very first time surfing, and I still can’t believe how amazing it went.

I booked the three-lesson pack and had beginner classes with both Jakob and Myma. They’re incredibly kind, patient, supportive and always ready to explain things in different ways until you get it. Something that I loved was how they taught me to read the sea, in other words to really understand how the waves works before trying to ride it. That insight completely changed the way I see the beach.

I’d recommend this school. In fact, It’s more than just a surf school, it’s a family. From the moment you step onto the property, you’re surrounded by smiles, good vibes, and people who genuinely love what they do. There are friendly dogs that come to play, great music in the background, the sound of native Tūī birds, the smell of salt in the air, and that breathtaking endless view of Muriwai and it’s black volcanic sand.

You don’t just leave knowing more about surfing, you leave with a piece of Muriwai in your heart. The only problem is, you’ll find yourself wanting to come back again to catch a few more waves.

Muriwai Surf School is a family run surf school and that is exactly how they make you feel, like one of the family. They truly make you feel safe, confident and welcome from arrival at the Surf shed to your experience in the water. Both Dylan and Martin genuinely lead every session with passion and enjoyment and support you to meet your aspirations whatever they may be with care. They live, breath and love what they do and that passion is contagious! I have done both one on one sessions and the advanced beginner program and I have loved every moment. Even when I am out surfing myself I can always hear a lesson going on with Dylan and Martin cheering on the people in their session, its awesome, everyone has so much fun! As some one that works in sport I do sometimes have super high expectations and this surf school always meets them, the family are genuine kind people and they are the heart of Muriwai beach.
