The Muriwai Gannet Colony is a remarkable natural attraction located just under an hour's drive from Auckland. It’s one of the few places in New Zealand where you can see Australasian gannets nesting on the mainland, making it a unique spot for birdwatching enthusiasts. Breeding Season: The colony is active from August to March, with around 1,200 pairs of gannets nesting on the cliffs and two nearby islands. During this time, you can observe the fascinating behaviors of these birds, including their dramatic diving techniques when hunting for fish. Viewing Platforms: There are well-placed viewing platforms that offer excellent views of the gannets up close. However, access to these platforms may be restricted due to weather-related damage, so it's good to check ahead before your visit. Scenic Walks: The area around Muriwai is also great for walking. The Te Henga Walkway offers stunning coastal views and is a fantastic way to explore the rugged landscape. Tips for Visiting Best Time to Visit: Plan your visit between October and January to see the gannet chicks as they hatch and grow. Photography: Bring your camera! The views of the coastline and the gannets in action are perfect for photography. Safety: Be cautious near cliff edges and follow any posted guidelines to ensure a safe experience. Muriwai Gannet Colony is not just about the birds; it’s also about enjoying the breathtaking scenery of New Zealand's west coast. Whether you're a nature lover or just looking for a beautiful day out, this spot is definitely...

The Muriwai Gannet Colony in New Zealand is a truly mesmerizing natural attraction. With its stunning coastal location on the North Island, it offers a unique opportunity to witness thousands of gannets in their natural habitat.

The colony's accessibility is a major plus; you can easily reach the viewing platforms, which provide excellent vantage points to observe these magnificent seabirds. Watching the gannets soar through the air and interact with each other is a memorable experience.

The rugged coastal scenery surrounding the colony adds to its appeal, making it a great spot for photography and nature enthusiasts. It's also worth noting that the views of the Tasman Sea are breathtaking.

However, to make the most of your visit, it's advisable to go during the breeding season (typically from August to March), when the gannets are most active and you can witness their courtship rituals and chicks. It's essential to respect the conservation efforts in place and stay on designated paths to protect the birds and their nesting areas.

Overall, the Muriwai Gannet Colony is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in wildlife and natural beauty, offering a captivating experience that's both educational and visually stunning.

. (12/2017) A wide landscape serving as a colony to hundreds of groups of gannets. The only gannet colony in the North Island. In case you have never visited such natural colony of birds, you will be surprised to notice such a huge crowd of birds in all sizes from eggs to really big ones. This place is very well maintained. Has been made better and safer over the years. Awesome views of Muriwai beach, sea and of the gannet herds all around. You may notice strong smell when there is a strong wind in your direction. There are interesting facts and stories provided in the form of boards at different viewpoints to know more about this place and gannets. You can drive up to this place and there is lot of parking available. Spacious parking area. Wheelchair parking is available and there is wheelchair accessible entrance. Alternatively there is safe but steep trail all the way from Muriwai beach to here in case you want some adventure and have enough time at hand. Walkways are clean and very well maintained. Seating and benches are provided at regular distances for taking rest and enjoying the views. Public restrooms are available at this location. In my view, this little hidden gem of a place in one corner of the city is a must visit...

The super soft black sand beach is magnificent. The tide was going out when we got there so we didn't get to see the blowhole in action, but I did climb down inside safely. There were crabs and green lipped mussels and sea stars galore. So nice and peaceful. Climbing up to the gannet nesting area would not be easy for those with accessibility needs, but the climb is rewarding. Technically the gannets are not meant to be home during winter, but there were hundreds of nested pairs here already. There is ample signage to teach you about the birds. They are not shy or afraid of humans (as they have no need to be, since we are not a natural predator for them). Please do not feed them or interfere with their nests. These beautiful birds are thriving without our assistance or interference. Feeding them will only change their behaviour unnaturally.
