The museum is normally in three parts: A temporary exhibition, right now 200 years of Marching band history, a while ago an amazing Jazz exhibition from the National library, then there is their instrument collection, several large rooms in an old barn filled with musical instruments from all cultures and times, and finally there is their newly reopened (after a fire) historical setting of a select few instruments. The last part is only accessible through their guided tours, which departs every hour (at least when I were there), and is in English or Norwegian, or both if people request it (don't worry though, they're really good at switching). The guides are amazing, and will even play little excerpts from historical pieces that they talk about on the museums old insturments. Such an amazing opportunity to hear early pianos, for example. If you're lucky, or check their website beforehand, there are even concerts there with top quality musicians. We (four adults) got tickets to the whole museum, an hour and a half concert and the guided tour for about 600 NOK. Highly recommended! If you're there in the summer, I also reccomend checking out their beautiful garden (and huge!) out back with trees from all around the world as well as a beautiful...

Like dyrt som andre kafeer. For barn: pølse, pannekaker, toast.)

The most fascinating museum I have ever visited. It is absolutely worth a visit if you have the opportunity.

The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and such talented musicians in their own right. Our guide for the day was a charming young man, a classical musician and student (who did tell us his name but I unfortunately can't recall it - he had mentioned it was hard to pronounce but is all I can recall) and this excellent chap played many of the instruments for us as part of the tour. His knowledge was incredible and his ability to play beautiful classical pieces, with his eyes closed no less, on each historic instrument was incredible to watch.

The home and instruments are beautifully preserved and maintained, and clearly loved and respected by the staff.

This was an excursion booked through a cruise I took just this month and I have to say it was one of my favourites. Cruising through the Norwegian Fjords was a treat in itself, but The Ringve was an experience I will...

Lovely music museum containing so many instruments in a chronological order. The main part can be visited during the normal working hours and you can click on the displayed buttons to hear how some of the exhibited instruments sound (a very practical touch). But you may wish to find out when they offer guided tours, as part of the museum is only open for the public with a guide, which really makes all the difference. We were lucky to catch such a guided tour, and the guide was amazing, took us through all the rooms while playing some of the instruments. The cafe is not good. If on time, I recommend taking the 15 min stroll towards the fjord and enjoy some good coffee and food at Sponhuset. If you really need a coffee here, don't take the espresso - maybe the Norwegian filter coffee is better. :)
