Sprawling and impressive market for everything you can imagine, and many things you couldn't. It's worth taking time to explore the various side streets and specialty markets packed within the larger market area. We'd heard stories of pickpockets and hard bargaining sellers, but veryone we met here was very friendly, and everyone allowed us to take photos when we asked. You'll need to watch your step around here, for the ground can be quite slippery and mucky, and you'll need to have a high tolerance for strong smells, dense crowds, and the sight of more than a few suffering animals. For anyone coming to Iquitos for an ayahuasca retreat, I would highly recommend visiting this market before your retreat, and not after, as it's a quite intense sensory experience.

Its a huge outdoor market that is the economic heart of Iquetos. I suggest taking a guide (very cheap) from ur hotel only because its easy to get lost in the 25 blocks and end up on the 'wrong side' of town where ur odds of getting mugged increase . Especially, if ur taking a camera or mobile phone . But definitely worth a visit, similar to asian wet markets but with exotic animals to eat like alligators , armadillos and much more .... :) ps: ask your guide to add on a little tour of the floating village right besides it . (And additional 3USD) total of : 10USD for 2 hours .

Very nice place to get some shopping done. Of course like anywhere in the world you should be careful and stick to the main road. I felt very safe and ordered some piranha and plantan which was delicious. Brush up on your Spanish, especially "how much is it" and "thank you". It is dirty and there are vultures everywhere (real vultures) along with dirty dogs but they don't seem to be vicious due to being around people so much. Don't let that deter you from going though. I enjoyed my walk and food.

This is definitely a local experience for traveller's to see the local market area of belen. This is dirty, often muddy, but this is how a market works in an area like this! Take time to enjoy the environment and experience. Take minimal valuables with you and hold those close as it can be crowded and easy opportunity for pick pockets. If they don't have the opportunity, they can't take it! Be respectful of the locals shopping and selling, this is their reality, but enjoy the experience!

A typical wet market in developing countries. They sell nearly everything so you can find nearly anything you need in Iquitos here, of course more like meat, fishes, fruits and vegetables. The prices are competitive with other markets (Nanay,...) and way much cheaper and fresher than supermarkets. There is also an alley with plant medicines like tobacco, Ayhuasca, San Pedro, etc. I enjoy going there every time. The best market in Iquitos!

Yes, it's dirty. Yes, the smell is, uhm, pretty intense. But, I found it to be quite the experience. Lots of really interesting food that unfortunately I didn't dare try, because I was off to an Amazon River expedition later in the day and couldn't take any chances. But I would 100% recommend to check it out if you're in Iquitos and feeling adventurous (and why would you be in Iquitos if you're not?).
