Phantastic place... but ... no shop...not one water...no toilets...no loading stations for mobiles...no services....no Wi-fi hotspots...no loading stations for e - cars ...touristically deserts. This exactly this is the ground why Spain growth up...and Portugal...live in year 1976. Ideas and willing...to be best...like Norway, Finland , Germany and Spain. The river is not more shippable...why nobody knows about reconstructions...new fields of tourism industry is possible...if you can paddle from ocean with kajaks until this phantasm places. In the past that point was one powerfully handles place. All over in Portugal the same structures ...not used hotspots... if they can't...they must ask the american nature saving tourism industry... suffering about this incompetence had/ have the poorly population... that's a criminal...

Castle of Aljezur

Type: castle Time spent: 20-25 min WC: not available Path for disabled: not available Car parking: available Bike parking: not available Price: free Public transport: bus [to Aljezur] + 10-15 min walk

The castle site was occupied by Lusitanians, who constructed a castro to oversee their lands. By the 7th-8th century, the Visigoths also used the space as a sentry to safeguard their territory. By the beginning of the 10th century, a small town was founded by Arabs. The castle was part of the Moorish defensive line, during the Almohad Caliphate. In 1242 (or 1246), Aljezur was taken by knights loyal to Paio Peres Correia.

The 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed the homes in the town, and demolishing most of the castle. In 1940-1941the walls were partially...

Both walks up to the castle are nice in their own way - the direct route is very steep but has a lovely eucalyptus forest to walk through for the last part. The more meandering route through the old town shows some pretty houses and gardens and is more gentle. Or you could drive, there's space for a few cars at the top. There isn't much of the castle to be honest, half a curtain wall and a couple of towers that look to be just solid platforms. There are information boards and...

Al-Jazur Castle overlooks the town of Al-Jazur on the west coast of Portugal. Although it was built in the 10th century, archaeological finds confirm that this place has been occupied since the Iron Age, (this is somewhere between 1200 and 600 BC) which is really challenging to understand. We stopped and walked up to see the view and the castle ruins. The old town was built on the hillside to the castle and the newer town was in the flat below. The region was rich in agriculture.
