The early occupation of the site has been linked to the presence of the Romans when they entered the Iberian Peninsula. Between 1992 and 1993, archaeological work in the keep proved a Roman presence in the region.

The first historical information about the area dates back to the reign of the first King of Portugal Afonso I. In 1297 the Belmonte Castle lost strategic importance, while the town was developing extramural.

Aunque en nuestro pais de España contamos con dos Belmontes muy conocidos uno en Cuenca y otro en Asturias, esta vez nos vamos a Portugal en dónde estuve en el mes de diciembre pasado. Una ruta por la Región Centro de Portugal, no sería lo mismo sin visitar Belmonte, puerta de entrada al Parque Natural Serra da Estrela. Llegamos en un dúa con mucha niebla que se fue despejando a lo largo del día. El castillo situado en lo más alto del pueblo construidos como fortaleza defensiva fue posteriormente transformado y donado a la familia Cabral, por ser el lugar en el que nació Pedro Alvares Cabral el primer descubridor del “Viejo Continente” que pisó lo que es hoy Brasil nació aquí en Belmonte alrededor de 1467. La historia del descubrimiento y las a las hazañas portuguesas de los siglos XV y XVI están documentadas y recogidas en el Museo de los Descubrimientos. Destacan su torre del homenaje, la ventana manuelina en el muro exterior del palacio y el recinto amurallado. Está muy bien restaurado y buen estado de conservación. Tiene unas buenas vistas...
