Amoreira Aqueduct

Type: Aqueduct Time spent: 5-10 min Parking: available Bike parking: not available Price: free Path for disabled: available

It connects the site of Amoreira to the city of Elvas. With 8.5 kilometers long, and 843 arches that rise to 31 meters high, it is considered as one of the largest aqueducts in the Iberian Peninsula.

It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910, and classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 2012.

The town of Elvas was supplied with water from the Alcalá well, located close to the old Episcopal Palace. However, from the 15th century onwards, due to the increase in population, the well became insufficient to supply the city with water.

At the beginning of the reign of Manuel I of Portugal, the local council thought about building an aqueduct that would bring water from the Amoreira area to the city center.

In 1537 João III of Portugal appointed the architect Francisco de Arruda, the author of the Água de Prata de Évora Aqueduct, to execute the project for the new Elvas aqueduct. The works began in the same year. Finally, in 1620, the first waters flowed through the aqueduct within...

The aqueduct is a monumental structure made up of 843 stone arches, stretching for approximately 8 kilometers, with a maximum height of around 31 meters and reaching four tiers in some sections. It served as both a vital water supply system and a symbolic element of urban defense for the city of Elvas. Its construction was initiated during the reign of King Manuel I in 1498, with major works commencing in 1537 under the direction of architect Francisco de Arruda. In 1622, the aqueduct began supplying water to the Fonte da Misericórdia (Fountain of Mercy). During the 17th-century Portuguese Restoration War, there was debate over dismantling the aqueduct for strategic reasons, but local citizens opposed the idea, and the structure was...

A beautifully imposing structure in the heart of town. They are currently doing maintenance on it and re-plastering it in sections, but there isn’t any scaffolding or anything obstructing the view. There is a lot of parking right next to the aqueduct. It’s really easy to pull over and get some great pics without having to walk much. We arrived at around 3pm and there were only a few other cars in the massive parking lot. About a four minute drive from the fort as well, really easy to see both quickly.

Very impressive and massive structure of aqueduct was build in the end of 16th century has its highest point of 30m! and on the ground level stretches 5,5 km. Its a symbol of the Elvas city. Best to visit is this aqueduct is via eastern gate. where the aqueduct in on the ground level there are obstacles, so if you thought like me to climb on the upper level of this magnificent structure, no, its not possible, also probably illegal, not saying dangerous.
