Benagil Kayaking — Attraction in Lagoa

Visiting the Benagil Cave with BenagilKayaking was the highlight of my trip to Portugal! This company truly goes above and beyond to ensure guests have the best possible experience in Faro.

My original kayaking tour on April 10 was canceled due to rough sea conditions—completely understandable, as safety always comes first. However, seeing the Benagil Cave was the main reason I traveled to the Algarve, and I only had one night there.

At 7 a.m., I called the BenagilKayaking office, and to my surprise, André—the owner himself—answered. Once he heard about my situation, he went out of his way to help. André personally contacted other companies in the area, searching for any available boat tours. By 8:30 a.m., he picked me up from my hotel and drove me to Benagil, then went to the marina in Portimão, tirelessly checking for options. Eventually, he found an amazing boat tour—and it was absolutely unforgettable.

This was hands down one of the most unforgettable experiences of our lives! From the moment we arrived, the team put us at ease—our initial guide struck the perfect balance between serious safety tips and hilarious one-liners that instantly calmed any nerves (especially with kids in tow!).

We kayaked with our three boys (9-year-old twins and an 11-year-old), and the team’s advice on kayak configuration was spot on—total pros. Our guides, Pedro and the ever-charming guy in the safari hat, were absolute gems. Warm, personable, and incredibly fun, they had a magical way with kids and made every moment engaging. Pedro, clearly an educator at heart, gave thoughtful, fascinating insight into the history and geology of everything we saw.

Paddling through sea caves—some in total darkness—and witnessing the surreal colors and light filtering through was otherworldly. Truly, I’ve never seen beauty like this. I booked a sunrise kayaking tour, and there was a bit of a mixup on my part as well as the company’s. I didn’t end up getting to go on the sunrise tour so I can’t comment on how that would be. The tour organizer did such a good job and went above and beyond to make sure that it was still a great experience for me, he picked me up from my hotel personally and put me on the 930 tour to make up for the mistake. The guides were very knowledgeable and friendly and we spent so much time in Benagil cave as well as another nearby cave called Captain’s cave. I was in a kayak with the guide and he paddled for us the entire time which was so sweet. There were two other travellers in my group who were travelling with a big dog, even though they had never had a dog on a kayak they did everything they could to accommodate them which I thought was very kind, considering the people told me they had spoken to other companies who wouldn’t or couldn’t accommodate.
