The monument pays tribute to over 9,000 Portuguese soldiers that lost their lives fighting in several colonial conflicts, or rather wars, that the crumbling Portuguese empire was engaged in for over 12 years, from 1961 to 1974. Those who lived in the 1970s must remember the news coming from Mozambique or Angola at the time. By the early 1960s and even more so in the 1970s all European colonial powers (think England and France) got out of the colonial business with varying degree of bloodshed involved. Not so Portugal, that due to its dictatorship regime just couldn't let its overseas, all of them African, possessions go. The loss of human lives was one of the main reasons of the mass immigration from Portugal at the time and the ultimate overthrow of the regime by the junior officers in April 1974. The name of each soldier and officer who died fighting their Empire's colonial wars is engraved in the walls surrounding the central triangular stella. Ich nazwiska są wypisane na tablicach znajdujących się na murze starego fortu Buen Suceso za pomnikiem. Jest też mała kapliczka Capela e Memorial schowana za pomnikiem w murze fortu. Trójkątny kształt monumentu stojącego w wodzie ma symbolizować zjednoczenie narodu i płomień pokoju. Za pomnikiem w forcie Buen Suceso znajduje się muzeum wojskowe. Można trafić tutaj na uroczystości wojskowe i musztrę. Miejsce czyste, pełne bieli i w słoneczny dzień można zrobić tutaj wspaniałe zdjęcia. Pomnik wtedy doskonale odbija się w wodzie. Przed monumentem stoją dwie małe ozdobne wartownie. Idąc wzdłuż muru fortu w kierunku oceanu można jeszcze zobaczyć mały pomnik kombatantów z gołąbkiem pokoju – Aos Combatentes Das Missoes De Paz. Atrakcja za darmo. W pobliżu tego miejsca jest wiele akcentów militarnych – armat. Będąc w dzielnicy Belem warto zobaczyć ten monument. Dojazd z centrum miasta tramwajem linii numer 15E lub kolejką podmiejską. Obok monument znajduje się park Jardim da Torre de Belem, wieża Torre de Belem, muzeum militarne Museu do Combatente, kawiarnia Cafe do Forte i TOALETA publiczna zaraz obok za 0,50 Euro, pomnik Joao Jayme De Faria Affonso oraz armaty i działa. Jeśli jest się grupą stojącą w kolejce do zwiedzania wieży Torre De Belem to proponuję aby grupa podzieliła się na dwie części. Jedna stałaby w kolejce a druga w tym czasie obejrzałyby sobie to miejsce i okolicę. Potem zmiana. Czas stania w kolejce do wieży w sezonie turystycznym jest wystarczająco długi aby móc to zrobić i nie marnując czasu zwiedzić okolicę. Nawet w tym czasie można zwiedzić muzeum wojskowe.
