Castle of Marvão Type: Castle Time spent: 40-60 min Parking: available [!]better to leave a car at the entrance of the city [porta de Marvao]. The streets are tiny. Bike parking: not available Price: 1.5 EUR WC: available The construction of the castle at Marvão was attributed to 9th century Islamic knight, Ibn Marwan, who began to dwell in the castle between 876 and 877. The rural castle crowns the quartzite clifftops of a hilltop that is 867 meters at its highest point, at the keep tower. The site walls enclose the totality of the urban agglomeration of Marvão. The medieval castle post-dates the year 1299 and features numerous characteristics of a crusader-era castle. These include a tall central keep with a raised entrance on the first floor; a series of lower; high-placed arrow-slits; and open spaces to aid the sheltering and assembly of villagers and troops. Additionally, there is a huge rain-collecting cistern to supply water to both the keep and the castle.

Magnificent. That goes for the castle, the view from the castle, the walk along the walls, just everything is magnificent. I am not as young as I once was, and my knees won't allow me to do some of the things I once did, so I chose not climb some of the more uneven steps along the higher parts of the castle walls. But, my wife did with no problems so I acted as the photographer for her and our trip. There were only one or two places where I did not feel comfortable, but the rest was no problem. Also, at night, the weather was clear, so by standing near the garden adjacent to the castle, we could see many, many stars from this location. Just awesome. I would definitely put this on my 'must see' list should I ever go to Portugal again. I would love to re-visit this castle. Maybe I'll get some new knees. LOL. All photos below were taken by my wife with her Moto phone.

The view form the castle is breathtaking and it is relatively fresh in summer as it is about 800 meters above sea level. The inexpensive entrance fee includes a leaflet explaining the history of this garrison town castle, there is also an app to guide the visitor, but it did not seem to work on our phones today. Most of the protection walls highest points and turrets are open to the visitors but beware with small children as there is no protection from accidental falls. A surprise, and definitely a gem in our visit, the small orchard in the internal courtyard with few fruit trees and lavender flowers bringing a marvelous scent to the area. Don't miss to visit the impressive water cistern that allowed the garrison village to resist for up to 6 months. The castle also features few souvenirs and local artisans shops.
