The best preserved and best taken care of medieval fortress, housing a beautiful historic center. Based on the old Roman city/fortress, Alba-Carolina is situated perfectly on the hills, while still retaining accessibility.

Very well cared for, providing all electric clean transport (bus tours and/or bikes with dedicated lanes).

Free to visit most of the citadel, with prices inside being really decent (some local food varieties being sold amongst plenty McDonaldsian-type of pancakes and juices that would really hit your blood levels - pro tip: local food is very high on fat; try it in moderation, with little to no bread, regardless on how well food+bread might apetise, and always drink plenty of water, especially when walking a lot and/or in hot summer days - temps can go up to 37 C).

Pro tip 2: While in the area, consider other medieval landmarks that are less than 1 hr away, using the new free-to-use highway.

Pro tip 3: drivers in this part of Romania tend to floor it, even in low speed areas and by using less old/not so stable/not so well...

This citadel is of the Vauban type and it is the largest remaining bastion fortress standing from Romania and one of the largest in South Eastern Europe. In my view, it is truly a masterpiece in terms of the intricate system of fortifications. Everything from the walls, edges, avenues,, Socket and gates show true craftsmanship. I highly recommend taking the electric minibus guided tour. It is only 20 RON per person. The guide is truly passionate about what he is presenting and is very interactive in discussions. He also provided us with a lot of fun facts which can be translated globally. For example, did you know that the word salary comes from salt? Workers used to be paid in salt as this was a very scarce resource back in the day and a mineral that the human body very much needs to function properly? The citadel is lit beautifully and night. It has a lot of landmarks that are worth visiting. There is parking just outside of it. Highly suggest you see it...

✅ The Alba Carolina Citadel is a stunning star-shaped fortress located in Alba Iulia, Romania, and it’s one of the most impressive Vauban-style fortifications in Eastern Europe 🌟. Built between 1715 and 1738 during the Habsburg rule, it was designed by Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti and later completed by other engineers. 🏰 Highlights of the Citadel - Seven Bastions: Each named after saints or historical figures, forming the iconic star shape. The citadel features seven gates, aligned along an east-west axis known as the Tourist Route of the Citadel. Inside, you’ll find the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Michael, the Coronation Cathedral, museums, gardens, and monuments like the equestrian statue of Michael the Brave. 🎟️Free Access: Open day and night for walks, with museums and cafes operating on their own schedules. I highly recommend it to visit once in your life! 🔝 Visited...
